Roscommon U-20 football manager, Cian Smith, has praised his players for putting the learnings from last week’s loss against Mayo to good use against Sligo on Wednesday evening.

The Rossies got the better of the Yeats County, 1-16 to 0-10, and the former Boyle player and manager was in no doubt why things had turned around in the space of seven days.

“The hardest part of this job, for me, is telling lads that they won’t be getting a jersey on a Wednesday evening. There are lads really disappointed and, to be honest, I’m glad they’re disappointed. I try to foster the thing where lads aren’t happy to be on the panel. I want everyone here to be contributing.

“When I tell lads on a Sunday that they’re not togging on the following Wednesday, it kills them. It’s not easy but every one of them, to a man, adds to the next training session, and there are no issues.

“These lads are like sponges, they’re great to deal with. They’ll be coming to me with the solutions to any issues we may have. It’s all positive from our perspective,” he said.

Roscommon’s next game is against Galway in Tuam Stadium on Wednesday, April 9th, before they round off their campaign at home to Leitrim a week later.
