St. Aidan’s midfielder Gavin Meares hailed his charges after they secured a return to the intermediate ranks.

After claiming the county Junior A title in 1966, the next 57 years saw St. Aidan’s never operate below intermediate level until they suffered relegation to the Junior ranks ahead of the 2024 campaign.

However, their three year stay at junior level has come to an end and they will return to the second tier of football in 2027 after defeating Ballinameen 3-7 to 0-11.

For Meares, the win was huge for Ballyforan and the surrounding areas.

“It means so much to the people. We didn’t really get to celebrate the hurling last week. We picked up a few knocks during the week but the subs coming in last week won us the game and today they won us the game as well. My goodness we will really enjoy the next few days.

“It is two weeks’ time until we are up against Tooreen in the hurling. We trained all year together. We have put in a lot of work, we have trained so hard all year. Everyone rowed in behind each other and I am so delighted for everyone involved that we finally got over the line.”
