The nephew of a former Roscommon District and Football League (RDFL) Chairperson made his Champions League debut on Tuesday night.

Martin Conboy, who has worked hard to promote soccer within the county, saw his nephew Alex Murphy start for Newcastle United in their home Champions League game against Azerbaijani side Qarabag FK.

Murphy, who hails from Annaghdown in County Galway, helped Newcastle secure a 3-2 win at St. James’ Park.

The Republic of Ireland youth international had made six substitute appearances for the Magpies prior to starting Tuesday night’s game. He lined out at left back before later moving to centre half, acquitting himself well in his first start for the club.

This win saw Newcastle United overcome Qarabag 9-3 on aggregate.

Eddie Howe's side will meet either Chelsea or Barcelona in the Last 16 of the Champions League.
