Roscommon competitors shine at national finals of Community Games in Carlow
Adam Duke, Tarmonbarry/Scramogue, gold medal winner in the U-10 100 metres at the national finals in Carlow.
County Roscommon enjoyed a hugely successful weekend at the Cairn Community Games National Finals in SETU Carlow, bringing home three gold, six silver and three bronze medals, along with two fourth-place finishes.
A total of 127 children from 18 areas across the county competed among more than 4,000 participants from around the country. Roscommon athletes took part in track and field events, rounders, Gaelic football and seven-a-side soccer, producing a series of outstanding performances across the two-day finals.
Track and field competitions for U-12 to U-16 athletes, along with rounders, took place on Saturday, while Sunday belonged to the U-8 and U-10 age groups, many of whom were competing at national finals level for the first time.
The younger competitors also enjoyed a surprise lap of honour on the Community Games train.
The standout performers were Tarmonbarry/Scramogue and Drum/Clonown/Monksland, who secured Roscommon's three gold medals. Hannah Deely and Adam Duke — both representing Tarmonbarry/Scramogue — were crowned All-Ireland U-10 100 metres champions after winning their heats and semi-finals before producing dominant displays in their respective finals.
Hannah added gold to the silver medal she won in the U-10 200 metres in 2025, while Adam improved on last year's performance when he narrowly missed out on a podium finish.
The Drum/Clonown/Monksland U-14 girls’ relay team also struck gold, claiming the All-Ireland title after superb performances throughout the heats, semi-final and final against competitors from 24 counties. Their success was particularly rewarding after previously missing out on medals by the narrowest of margins.
Silver medals were won by Adam Craven (Taughmaconnell) in the U-8 60 metres, Emily O'Brien (Roscommon/Kilteevan) in the U-10 girls’ hurdles and Devan Curran (Tulsk) in the U-12 boys’ long jump.
Roscommon/Kilteevan's U-16 girls’ relay team also earned silver after an impressive performance against strong national opposition.
Drum/Clonown/Monksland added two more silver medals through their U-10 mixed Gaelic football team and U-12 girls seven-a-side soccer side.
The soccer team showed tremendous determination to reach the final, defeating Longford South and Town on penalties after a dramatic semi-final that finished 2-2 following extra time. They eventually came up against a strong Broadford/Drumcollogher (Limerick) side in the final but still took great pride in their silver medals.
The Drum/Clonown/Monksland U-10 mixed Gaelic team also reached the final after overcoming Malahide (Dublin) in the semi-final before falling to a talented Clontibret (Monaghan) side.
Bronze medal success came through Emer Hanley (Knockcroghery/St. John's) in the U-12 girls’ ball throw, while Elphin claimed bronze in both the U-13 boys’ and U-15 girls’ rounders competitions after winning their respective third-place play-offs.
Roscommon also secured two fourth-place finishes through Rebecca Flanagan (Loughglynn/Lisacul/Gorthaganny) in the U-10 100 metres and Shea Finneran (Taughmaconnell) in the U-8 60 metres.
Many other Roscommon athletes reached semi-finals against the best competitors in the country, highlighting the depth of talent throughout the county. Congratulations are due to all athletes, coaches, parents and supporters who represented Roscommon Community Games so proudly throughout the weekend.

On the weekend of September 5th/6th, the cultural finals take place, so there’s more excitement to come for the county’s young artists, handwriters, model-makers, project teams, skittles, choirs and talent — singing, music, dance, recitation and drama/comedy.
From show-stopping performances to extraordinary artistic talent, the weekend will showcase passion, flair and community spirit.
County Roscommon will have a large contingent of competitors taking part in the finals, hoping to increase the county’s medals haul.
