Roscommon held their nerve to get their All-Ireland Premier Junior Camogie Championship campaign off to a winning start at Ballyforan on Saturday afternoon.

Despite playing against the wind in the opening half, the home side hit 1-5 and kept their opponents scoreless, thanks to a resolute defensive display where Aimee O'Connor and Anna Hussey were outstanding.

But Tyrone, who beat Roscommon in the league earlier this year, were a different proposition after the break, and even though Grace Geraghty grabbed a second goal after 37 minutes to leave her side 2-6 to 0-1 in the clear, Tyrone hit 1-4 without reply to put the game back in the melting pot.

Roscommon goalkeeper, Michaela Finneran, also made a couple of smart saves to ensure that a Tyrone team, buttressed by the excellence of Reagan Fay, Sammy McCullagh and Aoibhinn Daly, got no closer.

Substitute Sarah Dooley ended a 23-minute scoring drought for Mary Grehan's side, and when Orla Connolly brought her tally to 0-6 with her fifth placed ball of the afternoon, Roscommon could breathe a little easier ahead of next weekend's trip to Kildare.

Roscommon scorers: Orla Connolly (0-6, four frees, one '45), Rachel Fitzmaurice (1-1), Grace Geraghty (1-0), Sarah Dooley (0-1).
