Kiltoom’s Martin O’Grady (22) and his rowing colleague, Donagh Claffey (21) from Athlone, will be taking on a new challenge in elite competitive rowing at this weekend's U-23 European Rowing Championships near Prague in the Czech Republic.

Both rowers are very successful double sculls partners and recorded a major achievement in June when they took home the bronze medal for Ireland at the U-23 World Rowing Championships in Poland.

Now Martin and Donagh will be participating in the European U-23 Championships at the weekend near Prague as part of an eight man Irish team in the same boat.

They will be taking on competitors from the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Poland, Romania and the Ukraine.

The team's preparation for this eights event involved an intense training camp at the National Rowing Centre in Cork.

The heats take place on Saturday and the hope is that Ireland will make it through to the ‘A’ Final on Sunday to be in the shake-up for the medals.
