Kayleigh Shine helped Athlone Town AFC to a 4-0 win over Cardiff City in the first game in what the Midlands club will hope will be an extended European run.

The South Roscommon woman played the full 90 as Athlone Town cruised past their Welsh opponents on home soil. Athlone Town will have little time to soak in this victory in front of a sold out crowd of 1,916.

The Midlanders will enjoy home advantage once more this Saturday as they play Croatian champions Agram.

Róisín Molloy from Gurteen in Sligo shone brightest as she scored a quickfire brace towards the end of the first half as Athlone Town led their Welsh opponents 3-0 at the interval.

Molloy teed up Izzy Groves for the opening goal of the game and when Hannah Waesch bagged her side’s fourth goal after 49 minutes, Athlone Town were able to cast an eye forward to this Saturday’s crucial game.
