Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke have been given a hero's welcome following the World Boxing Championships.
Aoife claimed gold in Liverpool last Sunday as she and Lisa, who claimed gold at the World Championships in 2022, were welcomed back to Castlerea Boxing Club with open arms.
The Castlerea boxer won all three rounds against Busra Isildar of Turkey, with a 5-0 unanimous decision from the judges.
It means that she joins her sister, as well as Amy Broadhurst, Michael Conlon, Kellie Harrington, and Katie Taylor as a world gold medallist.
Aoife told the Roscommon Herald that she was honoured to see the huge numbers in attendance.
“The whole of Roscommon and our community here in Castlerea, they go above and beyond for us every time win or lose. They are always there supporting us.”
Aoife stated that she was able to stay in the moment throughout the tournament which she feels was key in her performing on the big stage.
“I suppose just blocking out that external noise or pressure that I would feel and just remembering that I am doing this for me and this is my journey. We all only get one chance at life and I want to be the author of my story."
