‘The Garden Where The Praties Grow’  at The Dock

Tommy Hayes and Anthony Hugees on set for ‘The Garden Where the Praties Grow’.

The poignant Irish history of the potato is explored in a compelling documentary screening at The Dock this October.

Intertwining the cultural significance and history of potatoes, or "praties", in Ireland ‘The Garden Where the Praties Grow’ is the vision of renowned Irish musician and producer Tommy Hayes. His deep understanding of Irish traditional music and cultural heritage brought this unique project to life.

Tommy will be present at The Dock on Thursday, October 16th for a Q&A session after the screening.

Through traditional Irish music, viewers will discover how the potato, once a staple of daily life, became a symbol of both hardship and hope, resonating deeply within the Irish identity. Filmed over three days in the original founders' building at Seed Savers, County Clare, the documentary captures the raw energy of live performances by some of Ireland’s finest musicians — collectively known as ‘Potatoes with Everything’.

Each performance was recorded and filmed live, bringing life to the music, song, and dance — central to Irish folklore and tradition. Interwoven throughout these performances are interviews with organic growers and experts in biodiversity and sustainability, offering a broader perspective on the cultural and historical impact of the potato on the Irish psyche.

Tickets are €12 / €10 concession and available via www.thedock.ie or via the Box Office at 071 965 0828.

This event is presented as part of Climate Action Week in partnership with Leitrim County Council.
