Local Notes: AED Group AGM, Bereavements, GAA Club Social

NOTED COMMUNITY ACTIVIST WIDELY MOURNED 

Mrs Maureen Kenny, Corroclough, Kiltoom, whose passing took place on Saturday, February 7th, at Roscommon Hospice, was one of South Roscommon's best known and most respected senior citizens. Aged 93 on September 9th last, she was the former Ms Maureen Mulleady, Clonkeen, Taughmaconnell, and she had been in ill health a short time. Of an affable and caring disposition, she was noted within her residential community for her innate decency, integrity and genuine nature. Her community involvements extended over a 50 year period and they were varied and wide ranging. A deeply religious person, she espoused Christian values by virtue of everyday example. She had been a handmaid at Knock Shrine for upwards of 50 years and also a Minister of the Eucharist in Knock for a period. She had great devotion to Our Lady and, in the decades past, she was a member of the Third Order of St Francis at St Anthony's Friary, Athlone. She also had decades of active involvement with the St Vincent de Paul in Athlone. In her adopted Parish of Kiltoom and Cam, she was an active member of the Kiltoom and Cam branch of the County Roscommon Association Supporting People With Special Needs and a long serving president of the Kiltoom PTAA Centre at the time of her death. She had the distinction of receiving the 70 years of PTAA membership emblem and certificate in recent years. In the mid-seventies, she was a member of the Kiltoom Women's Committee, which fundraised for the then refurbishment of the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay. She was also a member of the Kiltoom Active Age Group in her senior years and she enjoyed participating in all their activities and outings. Devoted to her immediate and extended family, she was a most obliging neighbour and she enjoyed friendships with a wide age range. An engaging conversationalist, she took a keen interest in all farming affairs, current affairs and political affairs and she was a lifelong supporter of the Fine Gael party. She supported a number of charitable causes and bequests over the decades and quietly helped out individuals in need. She was predeceased by her husband Tommy, a native of Glanduff, St John's, on May 16th, 2022 and is survived by one son, Declan, Carrowloughan, Kiltoom; daughters, Mrs Mary Cunniffe, Terenure, Dublin; Mrs Geraldine Kenny, Mount Temple, Athlone; Mrs Anne Higgins, Corroclough, Kiltoom; Mrs Irene Fleming, the Park, Athlone and Mrs Catherine O' Brien, Coosan, Athlone. She is also survived by brothers, Eugene, Clonkeen, Taughmaconnell; Anthony, Leixlip; sisters, Eileen, Connecticut, USA and Sister Nuala, Franciscan Missionary Sisters, New Jersey, USA; 18 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, Kiltoom, on Wednesday, February 11th, the burial took place in Kiltoom Cemetery. The principal celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Michael M Manus, PP, Kiltoom and Cam. The other celebrants were Very Rev. Michael Troy, Carmelite College, Moate and Very Rev. Sean Neylon, PP, Taughmaconnell. They were assisted by Deacon William Gacquin, Curraghboy. Her Knock Shrine handmaid colleagues formed a guard of honour outside the Church of the Risen Christ, on Wednesday morning.

AED GROUP AGM

The AGM of the Kiltoom Community AED Group CLG will take place in the Parish Hall, Ballybay, on Wednesday, March 4th at 7 p.m.. All those interested are welcome to attend the meeting.

LATE MS MARGARET HEATH 

The death took place on Friday, February 6th, at the Mountbellew Nursing Home of Ms Margaret Heath, Cloonloughlin, Mount Talbot. Aged 84 on March 13th last, she had been lovingly cared for at the Mountbellew Nursing Home in recent years. The deceased was a self-employed machine and hand knitter who was much in demand over a wide area for her undoubted skills in that work arena. She was noted for performing neighbourly deeds and kind acts in her residential community. A deeply religious person, she visited Knock Shrine a number of time annually down the years and she supported all Church linked activities and a number of charitable causes and bequests. She enjoyed reading and gardening as her main hobbies. The deceased donated her body to University College, Dublin, for medical research which typified her espousal of Christian values throughout her life. A Mass of Remembrance was celebrated in the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd, Four Roads on Sunday, February 8th. The chief celebrant was Very Rev. Michael Donnelly, PP, Frenchpark, a native of Mount Talbot and a nephew of the deceased. The other celebrants were Very Rev.Francis Beirne, PP, Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara; Very Rev. Sean Neylon, PP, Taughmaconnell and Very Rev. Aidan O' Boyle, Maynooth College. They were assisted by Deacon William Gacquin, Curraghboy. A member of a farming family of four girls, he is survived by by sisters, Mrs Mary Donnelly, Lisduff, Mount Talbot, Mrs Kathleen Meleady, Taughmaconnell, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives.

LATE MRS KITTY GLENNON 

The death took place recently in Chicago, USA, of Mrs Kitty Glennon, Chicago, who was wife of the late Michael Glennon, Camcloon, Ballydangan. Aged 93, she was the former Ms Kitty Power, Kilrush, County Clare, and had been an employee of a telephone company in Chicago, for a number of years. She was a frequent visitor alongside her husband Michael to Moore Parish in the decades past. She was predeceased 28 years by her husband, Michael and is survived by one son, Michael, Chicago, and one daughter, Rose, Chicago. She is also survived by one brother Joe in County Clare, three grandchildren and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection in Chicago the burial took place in Chicago.

LATE DR JOE MANNION 

The death took place on Sunday, February 8th, at the Belmont Nursing Home, Blackrock, Dublin, of Dr Patrick Joseph (Joe) Mannion, Kilmacud, Dublin, who was a native of Grange, Curraghboy. Aged 86 in March last, he had been in ill health a short time. The deceased was nationally known in academic circles and farming circles and he held the post of Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at University College, Dublin, for a number of years. Educated at Lismoyle NS, Roscommon CBS, University College, Galway and University College, Dublin, he undertook further degree studies in his twenties in both Germany and the USA. He will long be remembered by his teaching colleagues and all those who made his acquaintance for his undoubted intellect, affability and caring nature. He was an accomplished golfer and he also enjoyed walking and reading avidly and widely as hobbies. He was predeceased by his wife, Sadie, (nee Mc Nulty, Falcarragh, County Donegal) and is survived by his wife Sheelagh, sons, Martin, Enda and Joe and daughters Nora and Edel. He is also survived by one brother Thomas, Grange, Curraghboy; sister, Mrs Philomena Kurga, Templeogue, Dublin; 12 grandchildren, one great grandchild and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass on Wednesday, February 11th, at the Church of the Guardian Angels, Newtown Park Avenue, Blackrock, the burial took place in Shanganagh Cemetery.

GAA CLUB SOCIAL 

The Clann na nGael GAA Club is currently completing arrangements to stage the annual Clann community social night in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone, on this Saturday, February 28th. There will be a sit-down meal with music before and after the meal. The club will also be launching a reprint of the Clann na nGael Club history which was initially launched in the centenary year of the GAA (1984). The reprint is in a larger print format. The publication was penned by the late Tony Whyte, Thomastown, and was initially launched by the legendary broadcaster the late Micheal O'Hehir.

SOCCER CLUB CELEBRATIONS 

The Moore United Soccer Club is set to mark the 50th anniversary of its formation this year with the publication of an anniversary booklet. All former players, managers and officials with the club are requested to forward memorabilia, photos and match reports for inclusion in the booklet. CARD DRIVE WINNERS

The winners of the weekly progressive 25 card drive at the St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy on Tuesday night last were Mrs Marian Lynch, Mrs Audrey Flatley, Johnny Cormican, Ms Mary Duignan, Seamus McHugh, Liam Grehan, Gerry Menton, Sean Gately, Eddie Nestor, Vinny Brady and Cllr Tony Ward.
