The village of Castlecoote was left in shock and sadness as a dear friend and neighbour Kieran Connell passed away on Thursday, February 19th. Kieran was such a support to his community through hurling, football, Tidy Towns, Parish Pastoral Council and long-time member and past chair and instrumental in the development and ongoing running of Castlecoote Community Centre. He was also a good friend and neighbour. He wasn’t shy to put on the kettle when you called and would always have time for a chat. Kieran will be remembered with great fondness as a true gentleman, kind, supportive, knowledgeable and someone who was always cool and calm and never got excited. Sincere condolences to his dear wife, Ann who was always by his side and helping out with everything Kieran was involved in, his son, David, his daughter, Fiona, his daughter-in-law, Veronia, son-in-law, Basil, his grandchildren Molly, Tadhg, Kate and Ciara, relatives and friends.

The community of Knockcroghery, St. John’s and Rahara has lost another of its senior citizens with the recent passing of Mrs Maureen Beirne of Corbooley, Knockcroghery. She was in her 96th year. She enjoyed a long healthy and fulfilled life. She was formerly Maureen Beattie of Ballagh, Rahara and was the second eldest of a family of two boys and four girls born to her parents, Michael and Elizabeth Beattie. Maureen met her future husband Pake Beirne from New Ballagh, Rahara and married in February 1954. They made their home in Corbooley, Knockcroghery where they raised a family of five, three boys and two girls. Maureen was a devout Catholic, Mass sacraments and prayer were very important to her, and she made many visits to Knock Shrine over the years. She also treasured and looked forward to Fr. Ray’s visits. She possessed a kind and caring disposition and was devoted to her immediate and extended family, and they in turn gave her every care and attention which helped her to have a long and healthy life. What stood to Maureen all through her life was her ability to be content. She was a great worker and used her many home skills and took care of her family. She had a good relationship with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It was her strong faith that helped her to accept her many losses over the years, her husband Pake in 1993, granddaughter Sinead, daughter-in-law, Irene, her brothers Mattie and Edward John Beattie, her two sisters, Mrs Peggy Byrne and Bridie Keane, Roscommon and also her parents Michael and Elizabeth. Maureen will be long remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She is now sadly missed by her sons, Paddy, Michael and John; her two daughters, Mary and Margaret; her 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her sister Mrs Kathleen Tully. Concelebrated Mass in St. Patrick’s Church was followed by burial afterward in Gailey Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Fr. Ray Milton PP of Knockcroghery and Fr Michael Donnelly, Rahara with Deacon Willie Gacquin.

Sympathy is extended to Ann Connolly, Peake, Ballymacurley and her family on the death of her mother, Elizabeth (Lil) McLoughlin, Glin, County Limerick. May she rest in peace.
