SHOCK AT SUDDEN DEATH OF ACTOR

Gary Lydon, the actor best known for his collaborations with playwright Billy Roche and with directors such as Martin McDonagh and Steven Spielberg, died suddenly at the age of 61 last weekend.

Despite starring alongside household names, the bright lights never held much appeal, and he preferred the quietness of rural North Roscommon, where he lived for some time.

He born in London in 1961 to Irish parents but moved as a child to Wexford town. He worked extensively in theatre, television and cinema, but he will be best known to Irish audiences for roles in medical drama The Clinic, and crime drama Love/Hate and his more recent screen roles included playing a garda in Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin.

News his sudden passing has come as a great shock in North Roscommon. Old friends and acquaintances have recalled a quiet and unassuming man, who lit up the stage.

St. Michael’s GAA has expressed its sympathy to the Doherty and O'Brien families. Gary trained and played with St Michael's, reminiscent of his role as captain of an Intermediate Championship winning team in On Home Ground (on RTÉ), although his busy schedule curtailed his playing opportunities. In subsequent years, he was a regular presence on the sideline supporting the club especially when his son James was playing. May he rest in peace.
