Local Notes: Healing Mass, Card Drive Winners, Monopoly Run

LENTEN SCRIPTURE GROUP INITIATIVE 

A parish Lenten scripture group initiative is currently underway in the parish of Kiltoom and Cam. The group meets in the Parish Hall, Ballybay, Kiltoom, on successive Wednesday at 7 p.m. during Lent. All are welcome. More details @ www. elphindiocese.ie/matthew.

HEALING MASS 

A Special Healing Mass will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Prayer Centre, Curraghboy on Monday, March 9th commencing at 8 p.m. The celebrant will be Fr. Oisín Martin of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in Limerick. Confessions will be available from 7 p.m. and the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited at 7.30 p.m. Fr. Martin will bless Holy Water and all religious items after Mass. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and individual blessings for healing will take place after Mass. Refreshments will be available afterwards. All are most welcome.

LATE MRS MARY FAHY 

The death took place on Wednesday, February 11th, at her residence of Mrs Mary Fahy, Clonburren, Ballydangan. Aged 98 on December 8th last, she was the former Ms Mary Grady, Glinsk, East Galway, and she had resided in family setting at Clonburren since 1954. The deceased was a psychiatric nurse at St Brigid's Hospital, Ballinasloe, for a number of years prior to marriage. Of an affable and caring disposition, she was devoted to her immediate and extended family and was a most obliging neighbour and trustworthy friend. Over the decades, she supported a number of community and church linked events in her adopted parish. Alongside her late husband, Tom, she organised the weekly progressive 25 card drives in Moore Community Hall for a number of years and she played progressive 25 at the venue weekly. She was an activist with Moore Civil Defence and she had the distinction of winning an All-Ireland title with Civil Defence back in the eighties. A religious person, she supported a wide range of charitable causes and bequests and espoused Christian values by virtue of everyday example. She was a lifelong PTAA member and she enjoyed friendships with a wide age range. An excellent homemaker, she was skilful at baking, knitting and sewing. A sports enthusiast, she was a follower of the GAA scene locally and nationally and she recorded all hurling and football matches for many years and posted the tapes to her cousin, Sister Maura Staunton, Bethal, South Africa. Predeceased 21 years by her husband, Tom, a native of Meelick, Eyrecourt, she is survived by sons, Tom, Clonburren; Vince, Melbourne, Australia; daughters, Ms Breda Fahy, Melbourne; Mrs Mary Cuddy, Cappaleitra and Mrs Sabina Reynolds, Gurth, Creagh, Ballinasloe. She is also survived by one brother, Mickey, Glinsk; sisters, Mrs Tessie Scott, Glinsk; Mrs Bonnie Scanlon, Bury, Manchester; nine grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Clonfad, on Saturday, February 14th, the burial took place in Clonburren Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Michael Molloy, PP, Moore and Clonfad. The Month’s Mind Mass for the repose of her soul will be celebrated in the Our Lady of the Rosary Church Clonfad on March 13th at 7 p.m..

CARD DRIVE WINNERS 

The winners of the progressive 25 card drive at the St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy on Tuesday night last were Sean Gately, Kevin Donnelly, Mrs Karen Keogh, Padraig Harney, Ms Bernadette Mee, Johnny Hughes, Vinny Brady, Eddie Nestor, Tommy Cormican, Paddy Dolan and Gerry Menton.

BEREAVED 

Tom Leech, Scrine, Rahara, has been bereaved by the death of his brother, Brendan Leech, Corristoona, Ballintubber, which took place on Monday, February 16th, at Roscommon University Hospital. Aged 69 in December last, the deceased was an employee of the Health Service Executive at Roscommon University Hospital for the past 21 years and he was deservedly popular with his work colleagues and the general public alike. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was a most obliging neighbour and reliable friend. A Gaelic games enthusiast, he played club football with the St Croan's GAA Club in his younger days and he remained a follower of all St Croan's GAA teams and Roscommon GAA panels. He was also a racing enthusiast and he enjoyed card playing. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, (nee Farrell, Ballintubber); sons, Gerard and Mark and daughters Carmel, Mary, Jenny and Claire. He is also survived by brothers, Tom; Matt, Corristoona; Jimmy, Dromore West, Sligo; sister, Mrs Mabel Hynes, Tulsk; six grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St Bride's Church, Ballintubber, on Thursday, February 19th, the burial took place in Ballintubber Cemetery.

LATE MR DAVID O'BRIEN 

The death took place on Thursday, February 12th, at the Palliative Care Unit, University Hospital, Tralee, of Mr David O'Brien, Clieveragh, Listowel, County Kerry, who was husband of the former Ms Mary Beades, Ballinamona, Brideswell. Aged 51 in May last, he had been in ill health for one year and he bore his illness with characteristic dignity and fortitude. Of a caring and friendly disposition, he was noted for his innate decency, integrity and genuine nature. He was a senior executive official with Kerry County Council and he had served also as town clerk in Listowel for a number of years. In his work role he was a public official whose tact and discretion in all his dealings with the general public and work colleagues will long be remembered. Devoted to his immediate and extended family, he was a most obliging neighbour and trustworthy friend. An avid sports enthusiast, he was a follower of all Kerry GAA teams and the GAA scene nationally. He was also involved in under-age soccer in Listowel and enjoyed viewing all sport on television. He was also a racing enthusiast and enjoyed gardening and reading as his main hobbies. He is survived by his wife, Mary and daughters, Sadie (8), and Chloe (3). He was predeceased a number of years by his brother, Tommy, and is also survived by his parents, Brian and Maeve; brother, Ray, Limerick; parents-in-law, Eamon and Patricia Beades, Ballinamona, and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Mary's Church, Listowel, on Monday, February 16th, the burial took place in St Michael's Cemetery, Listowel. Deacon William Gacquin, Curraghboy, assisted the celebrants of the Mass.

BEREAVED 

Westmeath Fianna Fail Cllr Aengus O'Rourke, Bogganfin, Roscommon Road, Kiltoom, Athlone, has been bereaved by the death of his aunt, Ms Etna O'Rourke, Upper Irishtown, Athlone, which took place on Wednesday, February 18th, at the Retreat Nursing Home, Athlone. The deceased, who had reached an advanced age, had been the proprietor of a ladies boutique at Upper Irishtown, Athlone, for a number of years. She had undoubted business acumen and she was noted for her chatty disposition and her diplomatic skills in all her dealings with her customers. She enjoyed gardening and floral arranging as a hobby and she had friendships with a wide age range. She is survived by nephews Feargal, Dublin and Aengus, and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Mary's Church, Athlone,on Saturday, February 21st, the burial took place in Cornamagh Cemetery.

SYMPATHY

At the February meeting of Taughmaconnell Community Council in Taughmaconnell Community Centre recently sympathy was extended to the Kenny and Mulleady families on the recent death of Mrs Maureen Kenny, Corroclough, Kiltoom, who was the former Ms Maureen Mulleady, Clonkeen, Taughmaconnell. Sympathy was also extended to the Glynn family on the death recently in Britain of the former Ms Nora Glynn, Breole, Taughmaconnell.

AED GROUP AGM 

The AGM of the Kiltoom Community AED Group CLG will take place in the Parish Hall, Ballybay, Kiltoom, on this Wednesday, March 4th, at 7 p.m.. All those interested are welcome to attend.

FUNDRAISING CARD DRIVE

In memory of Paddy Seery a Progressive 25 fundraising card drive will take place in Moore Community Hall on Saturday, March 14th, at 8.30 pm. Tickets retail at €10 and all proceeds will go to Roscommon-Mayo Hospice. All additional donations for the cause appreciated.

MONOPOLY RUN 

Moore Scouts are currently completing arrangements to host Monopoly Run Ballinasloe from the Emerald Ballroom in the town on Saturday, April 11th, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.. Registration will be at 12.30 pm. Everyone is welcome.
