Local Notes: Help for Hospice, Lourdes, Bingo

Roscommon Sports Partnership has announced the return of the Roscommon Rockets Club Inclusion Camp. With games, activities, music and plenty of fun, this camp is all about encouraging participation, building confidence, and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to be active and included. The camp will run at the Strokestown Community & Sports Centre, F42 H516 on Tuesday, July 21st and Wednesday, July 22nd. Ages 5–10, 10 a.m. – 11.30 a.m.; ages 11–17, 12 noon – 1.30 p.m. and ages 18+, 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Registration via Eventbrite (online booking only). Attendees requiring support to participate in the activities or who need support with toileting/personal care must attend with a parent/carer support. Please bring water and a snack. Activities will be supervised and delivered in a fun, safe and inclusive environment.
The death took place recently in Leicester, England of Mr Alphonsus (Al) Owens, late of Lismehy, Strokestown. Alphonsus or Al, as he was affectionately known, is survived by his wife, Rosaleen, daughter, Marie, sons, Gerard, Garry and Lee, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents Luke and Winnie Owens and his brother Joe. He is mourned by his brothers, Raymond (Scotland), Liam (Dublin), Neil and Derek (Canada), Henry (Lismehy), and his sisters, Valerie Westernacher (Canada) and Una Murphy (Dublin). Al was a musician all his life and played the trombone with Seamus Scott’s band in the late 1950s, before moving to England in 1959. He became a drummer with different bands in England and latterly with a country and folk band known as Billy Finnegan and Stagecoach. The band toured Europe and played many venues back in the 1970s. Al was a man of pleasant disposition and enjoyed meeting people and having conversation. He always enjoyed his visits home to Lismehy, where he kept in touch with neighbours and cousins. He enjoyed reading and writing the odd piece of poetry. He had a deep love of everything Irish, its culture, its music, its history and its identity. His funeral Mass was celebrated in St Mary’s Church, Carnaska on Saturday, June 6 by his cousin Fr Gerard Dolan, Sligo. Interment of his ashes took place in Lisonuffy Cemetery. The funeral was attended by his family, friends and neighbours. After the burial, a tribute was paid to Al by his brother Henry, and a piper played an Irish lament at the graveside.
An exhibition and sale of paintings by Lily Walshe, in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, will be held in Creeve Community Centre F45HD89, opening on Saturday, June 13th at 7.30 p.m. with a cheese and wine reception. Raffle on the night. Donations welcome. Please support this worthy cause.

The Achonry and Elphin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from August 28th to the September 2nd inclusive. Those who travel as part of the assisted pilgrim section will stay in Accueil Notre Dame, which is situated near the grotto and sanctuary are. They will be cared for by the diocesan pilgrimage care team while in Lourdes. Application forms and full details are available from Fr. Congratulations are extended to Maureen Higgins, daughter of Robert and Margaret Higgins, Carrowduff who was married to Stephen Kissane, son of Dinjoe and Eylene Kissane, Gweedore, Donegal. The wedding took place in St. Patrick's Church, Ballinaheglish on Friday, May 29th. Wishing the couple many years of health and happiness.
The death occurred May 31st of Mr Harry Crowley Cargins Park, Donamon. He will be forever missed by his loving wife Mairéad, sister-in-law, Emma, brother-in-law, Declan, aunt, Bridie Dwyer, Michael, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends. Predeceased by his beloved parents Jack and Maureen. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Thursday in St Patrick’s Church, Clooneycolgan, burial took place in Oran Cemetery.
Slatta National School will close permanently on June 19th. In advance of the closure, the school will be open to the public on Saturday, June 13th from 7-9 p.m.. Past pupils are invited to call in for a chat and to share stories from their school days in Slatta. Refreshments will be served.
