Local Notes: Heritage Week, park opening and charity run

Great news from the All Ireland Fleadh in Wexford on Friday morning. Third place for Elphin Set Dancers under 15s mixed set Dancers. Huge congratulations to teams and tutor Michael Gunn. More great news for Elphin Set Dancers when the U-12 full mix set came third in the All-Ireland Fleadh at Wexford. Congratulations to the 15-18 Mixed Half set placing 3rd. A special mention to the other 15-18 Half set who also danced so well.
The AGM of the elphin community arts and drama group will take place on Saturday, August 9th 2025 at 8 p.m. in the community centre. All past, current and new members are welcome. A new committee will be formed at this meeting. Following the meeting there will be a showing of this year's production in An Bothar Rua and everyone is welcome.
The official opening of the and Palace Neighbourwood Park Sensory Garden will take place on Wednesday, August 20th at 2 p.m. during Heritage Week. This is the culmination of seven years of diligent work by the Windmill Committee, CE Scheme workers and local volunteers. This is a wonderful community amenity and resource which is very popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. The grand opening is a big event for Elphin and all are welcome.
The scheduled Tidy Up will now take place on August 16th from 10 to 12. Meet at Church Carpark. Everyone welcome. Come and meet your neighbours and help keep Elphin lovely. Elphin Tidy Town volunteers have been out and about around Elphin town planting, weeding, watering, sweeping and cleaning. We are very grateful to everyone who turns up to help and would like to welcome more members. We have great plans for the group and the town but need more help. An hour a week would be a wonderful gift and in that time a lot can get done. But if you only have 20 minutes or half an hour that would be a great help. No experience is needed. Everyone has different talents so feel free to slot in where suits yourself. We will post our meet ups on Elphin-our town facebook page. So just drop along, even to just say hello. If everyone does a little, nobody has to do a lot.
A ceili in memory of the late Phil Owens and to raise funds for North West Stop will take place in The Mayflower, Drumshanbo with music by Ceol na Mara on 23rd May 2026 at 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission €12.

The Junior Traditional Irish Music sessions have now returned to the Tower Inn for the duration of the school holidays, they are on Tuesday nights starting at 7 p.m. All Junior musicians will be made very welcome provided that they are accompanied by a parent. The regular Traditional Irish Music Sessions in the Tower Inn continue each Tuesday night at 8.30 p.m. with a big welcome for all musicians and listeners. With the summer holidays here now it would be a great opportunity for visitors to come along and have an enjoyable night of culture and entertainment, tell your friends. The next Singers Night in the Tower Inn is on Sunday the 31st of August at 8.30 p.m., it will as usual prove to be a very enjoyable night. All genre of songs will be catered for and all singers and listeners will be made very welcome so bring a friend and come along to the Tower Inn and you will not be disappointed.

Line Dancing with Shannon will take a break until September 2nd when the class will resume in An Bothar Rua every Wednesday at 8 p.m.. Its great fun and everyone is welcome, its also a great workout. Dont worry if you have never done it before, you will quickly catch up.

The death occurred on Friday, August 1st, following an accident at Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal, of Ms. Máire Murray, formerly of Harold's Cross, Dublin and Croghan Road, Carrick-on-Shannon. Máire was employed as chief Pharmacist at Saint Michael's Hospital, Dun Laoghaire for the past 23 years. Predeceased by her parents Joe and Nancy and sister-in-law Sylvia, Máire will be sadly missed by her sister Catherine (Kate), Dublin; brothers Tomás (U.S.A.) and Kevin (Cork), sister-in-law Allie, nephew Tom, nieces Anna, Alice and Lily, friends, extended family, neighbours and colleagues at St. Michael's Hospital, Dún Laoghaire. Máire's funeral Mass took place on Friday, August 8th in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Harold's Cross, Dublin, followed by cremation at Mount Jerome crematorium.

The Elphin/Achonry dioceses pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Sunday, August 17th. There will also be a Family Day on the same date offering various activities for families and children. The dioceses extend a special invitation to altar servers from the parishes to join the pilgrimage with their families.
Croghan Organic Garden will have a pop-up shop every Friday during the Summer, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., beside Croghan Community Café. A selection of fresh organic vegetables will be on sale each week. Everyone welcome to drop by and purchase locally grown produce.

Keadue's Archaeological and Built Heritage given by Dr Kieran O'Conor University of Galway. The event will be in two parts (1) A 30 minute video on the Archaeology of the Keadue area created by Pan Digital Wedding Videos and narrated by Dr Kieran O'Conor. A 30 minute lecture by Dr O'Conor on the built Heritage of Keadue will be given followed by a question and answer session. In St Ronan's Hall Keadue on August 19th at 8 p.m.. Refreshments served and event funded by Roscommon County Council.
