Local Notes: Suck Valley Kayaking Club, Good Luck, Heritage Week Events

Rahara Tidy Towns and Development is inviting all current and former landowners from the wider Rahara area to take part in the Rahara Field Names Project, as part of National Heritage Week. The project aims to record field names and the stories connected with them before this valuable local knowledge is lost. Every field has a name, and many have a story - field names such as The Bull Field, The Haggard, Hannon’s Field. These names tell all about the history of land, the families who farmed it, old farming practices and local landmarks. Sadly, when this knowledge is not passed on, these valuable pieces of heritage can be lost forever. Landowners are invited to Rahara NS on Sunday, August 16th at 10.30 a.m. (after Mass) to help record these important names and any stories behind them. You don’t need to know every field name, every memory and story is valuable. Have a chat with parents, grandparents, relatives or neighbours beforehand; you may uncover names and stories that have been forgotten over time. Come along for a cup of tea and a chat and help preserve an important part of Rahara’s history for future generations. Mrs Eithne Naughten Lisphelim has been bereaved by the death of her mother, Vera Hayden (nee Gorman) of Ballyboy, Kilcormac, County Offaly. Vera passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in the excellent care of the staff of the Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore on July 25th. Predeceased by her husband, Tommy their 2 little infant girls, brother Edward, sister Mary, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law , Vera will be sadly missed by her heartbroken family, sons P.J and Joe, daughters Eithne, Anne, Agatha, and Margaret and seventeen grandchildren, sons-in-law Joe, Andy, Pat and Aidan, daughters-in-law Aisling and Amanda, nephews and nieces, extended family, great neighbours and a wide circle of friends. Vera reposed at her home in Ballyboy followed by her removal to The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, Kilcormac, followed by burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Congratulations to Niamh Watson and the entire Roscommon Intermediate ladies panel and management on being crowned All Ireland champions after a fantastic performance in Croke Park on Sunday, August 2nd. Their dream was realised when their captain was presented with the Mary Quinn Memorial Cup. Their performance on the day was outstanding, winning on a scoreline of 2-12 to Fermanagh 0-6. St. Domnic’s Club was proudly represented by Niamh who has been a long timer member of the club. She is the youngest daughter of Martin and Siobhan Watson, St. John’s.
Lake O’Flynn & District Angling Association will host the main event of the year, the Donnellan Cup, on Sunday, August 16th. This event is run with the support of the Donnellan family Ballinlough (main sponsors) and Inland Fisheries Ireland. There is an excellent prize fund for this event. Fishing is from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. with refreshments served afterwards in Donnellan's Ballinlough. As is the norm, this competition will attract anglers from all parts of the province and further who will battle it out with the locals to lift the prestigious Donnellan Cup. The Suck Valley Kayaking Club will hold an information evening and AGM on Thursday, August 13th at 9 p.m. in the Old Schoolhouse, Ballintubber (F45 T853). Following a short AGM, an open information evening will discuss plans, share ideas and help shape the Suck Valley Kayaking Club. Everyone is welcome and there’s no pressure to take on a role. The Ballintubber defibrillator group will hold a fundraising walk on Sunday, August 23rd, the Ballintubber Rambling Loop. Registration at the Old Schoolhouse at 12.30 p.m.. Grant funding has already helped the group to upgrade two defibrillators, but support is still needed to purchase another public-access defibrillator, cover installation and ongoing maintenance. Thank you to all who attended the Kilcroan Graveyard clean-up on Sunday morning, and on Friday and Saturday evening. All did a great job getting the graveyard looking well for Sunday’s Cemetery Mass. Mass will be celebrated in the graveyard at 3 p.m. on Sunday next.
A presentation on Griffith’s Valuation record for Kilteevan, Baslick and Ballintubber parishes will be held in the Trinity Arts Centre, Castlerea from August 15th – 18th, 12 noon to 6 p.m.. This presentation reflects the Griffiths Valuation record for the parishes of Kilkeevan, Baslick & Ballintubber which encompass the town of Castlerea and it's hinterland. The exhibit reveals the family name of residents living in these parishes in the mid-19th century, immediately after the Famine. The Griffith's Valuation record represents a crucial component in the range of resources available to the public helping in tracing family history.
Well done to the small committee on the Castleplunkett Development Association in conjunction with Roscommon County Council, on the official opening of The Castleplunkett Community Space, an inclusive space for the whole community to enjoy. This is a massive achievement for a small community and takes a lot of work to get a project like this over the line.
Local residents wish Ciara McGinty, The New York Rose, the best of luck in the Rose of Tralee. Ciara's late grandmother Patsy, sister of John Rogers and Peg Dobey hails from Emlagh, Castleplunkett. Good luck Ciara. Best wishes also to The Roscommon Rose, Rebecca Collins who is a great ambassador for the county. Good luck Rebecca.
Ardcarne Parish Graveyards Committee says a sincere thanks for the generous donations received during the recent tri-annual appeal. Any further donations can be passed along via committee members and receipts will be issued. Your support is very much appreciated.
As part of National Heritage Week Drumboylan ICA guild is hosting an Open Day in Drumboylan Hall on Monday, August 17th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and everyone is invited to come, have a cuppa, a chat and see some of the crafts on display.
A well-attended and most productive meeting was held in Templetogher on Wednesday last. The main item for discussion on a full agenda was the detailed preparation for the various events for National Heritage Week, which starts on this Saturday, August 15th.
A number of groups will be visiting Templetogher during Heritage Week. On Tuesday, August 18, a coach load from various parts of the county will visit and on Thursday, there will be a group from Killererin. The Heritage Open Day will be held at Templetogher on Sunday, August 23rd from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with the main event at 3 p.m.
The day is based on this year’s National Heritage Week theme “Heritage at Risk”, with many elements of heritage being celebrated. The programme includes Irish music, Irish dancing, songs, poems, excerpts from relevant books etc, and finishing with a couple of tributes to well-deserving people.
The multi-purpose sign on the Village Green is proving its value time and time again. It is currently promoting the annual Heritage Open Day, organised as always by Williamstown Heritage Society, at Templetogher Heritage Area on Sunday, August 23rd from 1 to 4 p.m..
Sympathy is extended to Shane McCabe on the death of his aunt, Mrs Sally Mulloy, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin and formerly of Prospery, Glinsk. Sally passed away on her 88th birthday at Ashbury Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her parents, Mick and Molly and her brother, Tony. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Fergal; daughters, Helen and Mary Clare; sons, Michael and Aidan; son-in-law, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Kathleen and Mary and brothers, Bert and John. The funeral Mass and burial took place in Dublin.
Glinsk LGFA would like to congratulate the Galway ladies on winning the Brendan Martin Cup. The last time Galway won the trophy the team was managed by PJ Fahy. Congratulations also to the junior team and management on winning the league final against St.James.
