RECIPIENT OF ROWING SCHOLARSHIP 

Anna O'Grady, only daughter of Declan and the late Mary O'Grady, Newtown, Kiltoom, has become the recipient of a rowing scholarship to Rutgers College, New Jersey, USA. She will take up the scholarship later this month as part of a four year long course in Nutritional Science at the College. Anna has just completed her Leaving Certificate at Our Lady’s Bower. A past pupil of Ballybay National School, Kiltoom, she began rowing competitively at the age of 11 with Athlone Boat Club. A member of a family of three boys and one girl, her brother Martin is an international rower with Ireland and he is competing in the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam on August 20th. Her brother Darragh, who is a social worker in Sydney, Australia, also rowed competitively with Athlone Boat Club. Paul Donovan, Barrymore, Kiltoom, who has been synonymous with Athlone Boat Club for many years, got the O'Grady children interested in rowing alongside his own children. Cathal O'Grady, the fourth member of the family, is also a sports enthusiast, and he plays rugby with Bucaneers Rugby Club in Athlone.

MASS OF THE ANGELS 

The 11th annual Mass of the Angels will be celebrated at Ss Peter and Paul, Athlone, on this Wednesday evening, August 19th, at 7. 30 p.m..

ADORATION 

There will be Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at St Brigid's Church, Curraghboy, on this Friday evening, August 21st, at 7 pm.

LATE MR MICHAEL HARNEY

The death took place on Thursday, July 30th, at Mountbellew Nursing Home of Mr Michael (Mickie) Harney, Muckloon, Ballyforan. Aged 94 in September last, he had been lovingly cared for at the Mountbellew Nursing Home for some time. The deceased was an employee of the construction scene locally for a number of years and he was also a part-time sheep and beef farmer. Devoted to his immediate and extended family, he was a most obliging neighbour and reliable friend. He was a lifelong PTAA member and he had the distinction of receiving the golden jubilee PTAA pin a number of years back. He took a keen interest in current affairs, political affairs and all farming affairs and he was a most engaging conversationalist on a one to one basis. A Gaelic games enthusiast, he was a follower of all Galway GAA and hurling teams and also all St Aidan's GAA panels. He is survived by his wife Ellen, (nee Kelly, Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim) ; sons, Stephen, Muckloon; Dermot, Galway; Darragh, Galway, Colm, Attymon, and daughter Mrs Deirdre Elwood, Castlegar, Galway. A member of a farming family of six boys and two girls, he is also survived by one brother Joe, Sydney, Australia; sister, Mrs Breege Stewart, Dundalk, County Louth; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, August 3rd, at St Joseph's Church, Ballyforan, the burial took place in Dysart Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Francis Beirne, PP, Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara.

BEREAVED 

Mrs Catherine Mulhern, Carrowkeeny, Curraghboy, has been bereaved by the death of her brother, Mr James Burke, Churchtown, Dublin, which took place on Friday, July 24th, at the Beacon Hospital, Dublin. Aged 78, he was a native of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. He had been in ill health for some time and he bore his final illness with characteristic dignity and fortitude. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was a most obliging neighbour and a reliable friend to all those who were privileged to make his acquaintance. He is survived by his wife Ann, (nee O'Connor, Waterford) sons, Des, Dublin, Colin, Dublin and daughter, Lucy, Dublin. A member of a family of one boy and four girls, he is also survived by sisters, Mrs Barbara McCarthy, Limerick; Mrs Catherine Mulhern; four grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at the Three Patrons Church, Rathgar, Dublin, on Thursday, July 30th, the remains were cremated at Mount Jerome Crematorium.

LATE MRS MOLL LANE 

The death took place peacefully on July 25th at Roscommon Hospice of Mrs Moll Lane, Coolusty, Athleague. Born Mary (Moll) Rabbett in Roscommon on September 9th, 1935, she was the youngest of nine children who grew up at Crubyhill, Roscommon. She married William Lane in 1958 and they farmed at Coolusty until William's sudden death in March 1990. They reared three children, Abbie, Marie and Pat and Moll was also a devoted grandmother to Conor Lane, Laura Lane, Dara Keenan, Aoife Keenan and Emmett Quinn. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs Nuala Kiernan, Luton, London; sons-in-law, Donal Keenan, Joe Quinn; daughter-in-law, Ann Muldoon, nieces, nephews in Ireland, USA and United Kingdom. A lady of great humour, Moll had a great love of all animals and her home was a hive of activity from morning to dusk. She also possessed a strong and unshakeable Catholic faith and was involved in a wide range of Church activities over the decades. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Patrick's Church, Athleague, the burial took place in Athleague Cemetery. The celebrants of the Mass were Rev. Joseph Ali, Athleague and Very Rev. Eugene McLoughlin, Roscommon, a former PP in Athleague.

BEREAVED 

Mrs Ann Marie Mee, Barrymore, Kiltoom, has been bereaved by the death of her father, Mr Patrick Gallagher, Tieveboy, Ballymote, County Sligo, which took place on Thursday, July 30th, at the Ballymote Community Nursing Unit. The deceased was formerly of Knockadoo, Coolaney, Sligo, and he enjoyed the respected and esteem of all those with whom he became acquainted. Of an affable and caring disposition, he was noted for his sense of neighbourliness in his residential catchment. He was predeceased by his wife Winifred, (Una), brother John and sister Annie, and is survived by sons John and Michael; daughter Ann Marie Mee; sister, Nora; son-in-law John; daughters-in-law Victoria and Elizabeth; four grandchildren, one niece, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at the Church of the Sacred Heart and St Joseph, Rockfield, Coolaney, the burial took place in Rockfield Cemetery.

CEMETERY MASS 

Hundreds of people attended the annual Open Air Mass in Kiltoom Cemetery at Curnaseer, Kiltoom, on Saturday evening, August 8th. The celebrant was Very Rev. Michael McManus, PP, Kiltoom and Cam. The choir was under the direction of Tommy Healy, Curnaseer. Tom Shine, Curramore, organised the sound and microphone equipment.

NOVENA 

A Novena to Our Lady of Knock is taking place at the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, Kiltoom, until August 21st. Mass will be celebrated in the church at 7 p.m. each day.

HISTORY TALK 

A talk will be delivered by the chairperson of the Moore History Group, Padraic Kilduff, titled "The Potts family and Correen Castle" in Moore Community Hall on this Saturday, August 22nd, at 7 p.m.. The talk will cover the period of time from the early 1700s to the 1940's and will focus on the Potts family from County Westmeath and their connections to Correen Castle in South Roscommon. It will also feature the trials and tribulations of the various family members who lived or had associations with Correen Castle.
