Local Notes: Musical Society Gets Ready for Frozen, Golf Lotto, Coffee Morning for Hospice
Excitement is building as Castlerea Musical Society gets preparations underway for the 2027 production of Disney’s ‘Frozen The Musical’. It’s a wonderful show with fantastic music, great characters and plenty of opportunities for a big cast, and the group has already had a brilliant level of interest. Castlerea Musical Society would love to welcome new and returning members to join the on stage production. Whether you’re an experienced performer or have always fancied giving musical theatre a try, this could be the perfect way to brighten up those long winter evenings. Castlerea Musical Society is a friendly, community group and as well as putting on a great show, there’s plenty of fun and craic along the way. Auditions take place on Sunday, October 4th from 3 p.m. in Trinity Arts Centre, Castlerea. As part of Social Inclusion Week 2026 Trinity Arts Centre is hosting an evening of fabulous singing this evening Tuesday, September 22nd at 8 p.m.. The evening will feature Castlerea Community Choir joined by local Ukrainian Choir "Harmony Voices" as well as special guests on the night. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in. Free admission.
The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for September 16th was 31. Winners of this week’s lotto were Gareth Scahill, Colm Larkin, Shane McHugh, and Declan Walsh. Each receive €100.
A course on health, wellbeing and self-care starts today, Tuesday September 22nd at RWN Castlerea. This course focuses on improving well-bring, self-care, physical and mental health. A course entitled Healthier Greener You - Climate Café starts September 23rd, 10.30 a.m.-1 p.m., at RWN Castlerea. The course will cover steps that can be taken at home and in daily lives to combat climate change and care for the environment. It’s all about minding oneself, community, families, and planet. The death occurred, peacefully, on Monday, September 14th, in the wonderful care of the staff at the Roscommon Hospice, after a long illness born with dignity, of Ms Christina (Chris) O'Reilly, Main Street, Castlerea. Predeceased by her parents, Martin and Gretta and her infant brother, Michael Brendan. Deceased, who was a dental nurse for many years at the medical centre beside Aras Mathair Phoil, was very professional in her job and was highly thought of by her employers and work colleagues and was always most helpful to all who attended for their appointments. She was a member of the Castlerea Church Choir for many years and also a member of the Adoration Chapel in Castlerea. She was a devoted catholic and a woman of great faith and always carried her rosary beads and medals that her late mother Gretta gave to her. Chris will be sadly missed by her sister, Mary Noone; brothers, Noel and Tony; aunt, Anne; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Her remains were removed from Gaynor’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening to St. Pattrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection on Wednesday morning celebrated by Fr. Mario Zalki, with co-celebrants Fr. Tom Kearney, Donamon, and Fr. Michael O’Brien, Roscommon she was laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The ceremony was enhanced by the music and singing of Jacqueline Kenny. Her work colleagues at the health centre, formed a guard of honour as her cortege left the church. May Christina’s gentle soul rest in peace.
The death occurred of Mrs Dell (Ellen) Keaveney (née Hannelly), of Kilkeevan Park, Castlerea, and formerly of Longford Lower, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, on Thursday, September 10th, peacefully, surrounded by her family, in the loving care of the wonderful, kind staff of Aras Mathair Phoil, Castlerea. Predeceased by her husband John, daughter, Maura, and sisters ,Maureen and Rita. Deceased was a very kind, gentle and jolly person, and a wonderful neighbour. She was a member of the Castlerea Church Choir for many years and also a past member of Castlerea Musical Society. She adored her grandchildren and loved when they would come to visit her. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her loving son, Sean; grandchildren, Clodagh, Dara, Rían and Caelan; daughter-in-law, Sinead, Gabriel, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends and the staff and residents of Aras Mathair Phoil. Her remains were removed from Gaynor’s Funeral Home on Sunday evening to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection on Monday celebrated by Fr. Mario Zalki, burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea. The ceremony was enhanced by the Castlerea Church Choir, under director Claie Kelly with organist Ena Conroy. The communion reflection ‘Safely Home’ was read by her niece Majella and the eulogy was read by her son Sean. May Dell’s gentle soul rest in peace.
Congratulations are extended to Mrs Rhona Cullinan, Lisananny, Castlerea, who celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends on Friday, August 21st. The evening began with Mass at 7 o’clock in Fairymount Church celebrated by Canon Liam Devine. He said it was great to see Rhona in such good health at the age of 90 and wished her many more years of health and happiness. A lovely evening followed in Fairmount Hall where all guests were treated to a sit down meal. Some had not met for years and the reminisced about old times. Indeed, Rhona mingled around and had a chat with them and made them most welcome. A most enjoyable night was had by all. Here’s wishing Rhona good blessings in the years ahead. On the following Friday, August 28th Rhona and members of her family made her annual trip to Lourdes for the Elphin/Achonry Pilgrimage which they enjoyed, and she said that she is looking forward to next year’s pilgrimage please God.

The cemetery committee wishes to sincerely thank all who helped in any way prepare for the Cemetery Mass and to all who contributed to the annual collection. The money raised will be used to enhance the cemetery.
