WILLIAMSTOWN

A LOCAL LEGEND REMEMBERED

It is just a year since John Quinn, Islands, passed away. A gathering in the Parish Hall of his neighbours and friends, following his First Anniversary Mass on Sunday last, was organised in his memory. This well attended event was a lovely tribute to a man who had contributed so much to the community over many years as an active, hardworking member of several voluntary organisations. The generous helpings of delicious food on offer, the chat, the fun, the camaraderie, and even the outburst of song would all have appealed very much to John. Without a doubt, he will continue to live on in the lives of so many people. Rest easy, John.

MAGAZINE SUCCESS

The annual Christmas Magazine ‘Off The Record’ published by the Williamstown Development Company has almost sold out, last few copies are available in the WCD Office. Thanks to all who purchased a copy, the advertisers who placed an ad, and all the many and varied organisations and individuals who contributed articles to make for an interesting and varied read. Feedback was most positive and particularly from those who post a copy overseas. Thanks to the WDC Office staff who worked on compiling and printing it, also the people who sold copies outside the shop in order to boost sales, left copies to the local businesses and helped in any way with distribution and sales.

ATHLONE RALLY

The community was very well represented at the hugely successful rally in Athlone on Saturday, held in opposition to the proposed Mercosur trade deal. When the livelihoods of people in rural Ireland is threatened, the strong unity of purpose immediately draws people together and enables them to show their feelings in a determined but peaceful manner. Whether this trade deal goes ahead remains to be seen, but the people of rural Ireland have made their feelings known in no uncertain manner.
