Local Notes: Padraig Pearses in Senior Championship Semi-Final, blessing of animals and Moore News

The Padraig Pearses (Taughmaconnell, Moore and Creagh) GAA Club will clash with St Faithleach's (Ballyleague, Cloontuskert and Ballagh) in the Roscommon senior championship semi-final at Dr Hyde Park, Roscommon, on this Saturday, October 5th, at 4.30 p.m.. On the way to the semi-final Pearses lost out to Clann Na nGael in the first round and then bounced back with defeats over St Dominic's, Boyle and latterly St Brigid's. The Padraig Pearses club was formed at the turn of the sixties and the senior panel brought the first ever county senior title to Woodmount in 2019 with a defeat over Roscommon Gaels. Pearses found themselves in the winners enclosure yet again in 2021 having defeated neighbouring Clann Na nGael Club in the final. The panel went on to bring a Connacht senior club championship title to Woodmount that year also by overcoming the challenge of Knockmore from County Mayo in Ballina. The Padraig Pearses GAA Club is one of the most active GAA clubs in the west and they have a number of pitches at Woodmount which enjoy usage seven days a week. The Padraig Pearses GAA Complex was officially opened on Sunday, May 20th, 1984 by the late Dr Donal Keenan, Ard Na Greine, Roscommon, a past national president of the GAA. The second county senior championship semi-final between Roscommon Gaels and Michael Glavey's will be played at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday, October 6th, at 2. 30 pm.
The death took place on Sunday, September 1st, at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, of Mrs Mary Claire Grenham, Doohan, Ballydangan. Aged 89 on August 10th last, she had been in ill health for some time and she bore her illness with characteristic resilience. The former Ms Mary Claire Duignan, Clonbulia, Ballydangan, she had resided in family setting at Doohan for the past 58 years. Of an unassuming and caring disposition, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who was noted for her sense of neighbourliness in her residential community. An excellent homemaker, she was particularly skilful at cooking and knitting. A keen gardener, she was widely known for growing and abundance of daffodils annually over the past decade to donate to the Irish Cancer Society for Daffodil Day. A devout Catholic, she supported a wide range of charitable causes and bequests. She was predeceased 13 years by her husband Michael and six years by her daughter, Mrs Anne Marie Buggy, Tullamore. She is survived by one son, Anthony, Doohan; son-in-law, Eddie; grandchildren Emmet and Graeme and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Brigid's Church, Drum, on Wednesday, September 4th, the burial took place in Drum Cemetery. The celebrants of the Mass were Rev. Michael Hickey, then CC, Drum and Rev. father Josef, CC, Drum.

The weekly progressive 25 card games hosted by the St Brigid's Handball Club at the St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy will resume on this Tuesday, October 1st at 9 p.m.. All card players are welcome to come along on successive Tuesday nights for the autumn and winter months.
John McGrath, Curramore, Kiltoom, has been bereaved by the passing of his brother, Dr Michael Francis McGrath, Tralee. The deceased spent the past 23 years as a GP in Tralee and was a native of Athlone. Glowing tributes have been paid to him by patients and colleagues on social media and also at his funeral Mass which took place at St John the Baptist Church, Tralee. He had been attached to the Carraig Medical Centre in Tralee since January 2001 and he carried out his daily work routines by inter-acting with his patients and colleagues in a spirit of care and collegiality. He was noted for his kind, caring and compassionate nature and his natural gift to put patients at ease. He treated people with respect and dignity in the course of his medical career and always displayed empathy and understanding, and, in turn, was admired and respected by all those privileged to make his acquaintance. The chief celebrant of the Concelebrated Mass was Dr Ray Browne, Bishop of Kerry, who is also a native of Athlone. He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Rosanna and extended family.
Mrs Joan Carty, Cloneash, Oldtown, Athlone, has been bereaved by the unexpected death of her brother, Mr Padraic Finnerty, Killarney, which took place on September 3rd at Tralee General Hospital. Aged 82 on March 23rd last, he was a psychiatric nurse by profession and he began his nursing career at St Brigid's Hospital, Ballinasloe and held the post latterly of Chief Nursing Officer at Killarney Psychiatric Hospital for a number of years. He was a regular visitor to his sister Joan at Cloneash over the decades. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was noted over the years for giving his time on a voluntary basis to various Christian charities. A native of Creagh, he was predeceased 15 years by his wife Marguerite (nee McDonnell, Curraghboy) and is survived by one son, Karl, New Zealand; daughters, Una, Australia and Olivia, Galway. He is also survived by three grandchildren and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at Killarney Church the burial took place in Killarney.

Moore Youth Club is once again up and running for the autumn and winter months. The club now has over 30 members. The past chairperson Tom Madden has now handed over to the new chairperson.
