The arrival of the month of June annually means that Tidy Towns groups in South Roscommon and elsewhere engage in general improvements and upkeep of their villages in anticipation of the adjudication. The chairperson of the Lecarrow Tidy Towns for the past year, Jimmy Darcy, who moved to reside in the Lecarrow area from Tallaght, Dublin, 21 years ago, informed the Herald in the past week that local resident, Mrs Monica Beegan, asked him to become involved with the Tidy Towns committee. This year, he added, that they would be carrying out general maintenance and improvements in the village environs and would also be seeking to have the canal walk-way upgraded. Independent Curraghboy councillor Tony Ward was a founder member of the Curraghboy committee back in the mid-seventies. He is pleased that they upped their marks significantly last year. He said they would be carrying out shrub planting, painting and general maintenance for the competition this year. Ms Mary Dohney, Ballyforan, has been a long-time activist with the Ballyforan committee. Special efforts are made each year with the surrounds of the village pump area and the hanging baskets. This year they will mainly engage in general upkeep and maintenance, she concluded.
