There was a deep sense of shock and sadness when the news broke of the unexpected death of Mr Michael ‘Tiger’ Lyons, Knockcroghery who passed away on May 23rd peacefully in the wonderful care of the staff at University Hospital Galway, surrounded by his loving family. His passing will leave a deep void not just in the parish of Knockcroghery but in a much wider circle when he was so well known. He was the second eldest of a family of three boys, born to his late parents, Pat and Margaret Lyons. He was born in November 1939 and was in his 86th year. Predeceased by his infant son Patrick, parents, Pat and Margaret and his brothers, Jimmy and Peter. Michael received his primary education at Ballymurray National School, afterwards he help out on the farm with his father. Like many young men in those years Michael decided to go to England for some time. He secured work and married the love of his life, Phil, who was a neighbour’s child from Gailey. They later returned home, took up residence in Knockcroghery, settled into the Lyons ancestral home and raised a family of three girls and four boys. Michael’s father and grandfather had been a big part of the village for a long time and was one of the families involved in making clay pipes, a tradition that made the village of Knockcroghery famous. His father Pat was a teenager in 1921 when the black and tans burned the village and he often told his three sons about how he slept in a car in the shed for months after their home was destroyed. Michael took over the running of the family farm with the help of Phil and the family. He was well known within the farming community and drove a cattle lorry for many years and covered the length and breadth of the country transporting cattle and sheep to marts and factories. Among other voluntary pursuits, Michael was part of the committee that revived the Knockcroghery Fair in the early 1990’s. Tiger as he was known to so many in recent years, loved going to the races especially the Galway Races when he was part of a large gang of Knockcroghery racegoers making the annual trip. In fact, he attended the Roscommon Races on Monday prior to his death. Michael had a great love for all sport and was a keen follower of Gaelic games, all through his life. In his younger days he was a great hurler and won junior county medals in 1968 and 1972 with St. Patrick’s and was part of the first St. Dominic’s team to win a county championship, the intermediate championship in 1973 (the team captained by the late Tony Coyne). His achievements and contribution to St. Patrick’s and St. Dominic’s Clubs are referred to in St. Dominic’s GAA Passion for Play book. Michael will be very sadly missed by his wife Phil of 61 years, daughters, Margie, Karen, and Polly; sons, Peter, Mike, Shamey and Tony; sixteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, extended family, neighbours and many friends.
The local cemetery committee has arranged a big clean-up of Ballintubber Cemetery on Wednesday, June 18th at 7 p.m.. The committee is appealing to people to attend to help with grass strimming, weeding and sweeping. Please bring strimmers, spades, scrapers, wheelbarrows, buckets and brushes. The committee is asking that Christmas wreaths, artificial wreaths in poor condition and withered flowers be removed from graves. If this is not done prior to the Cemetery Mass, the committee will be doing it. This clean-up is in preparation for the annual Cemetery Mass. Another clean-up when required will be organised prior to the Mass.

Gerard (Gerry Cunningham ) who died recently was a lifelong Liverpool supporter and it was fitting that a tribute was paid to him in the match day programme at the recent Liverpool v Chrystal Palace game. Residents are invited to an important public meeting in terms of having their say on the future of the community. Tulsk Action Group, in partnership with Tulsk Lord Edwards GAA Club, has secured significant funding to develop a master plan for a four-acre site next to the new pitch, a project that will shape the future of the community.
