AUGHRIM-KILMORE

BONFIRE NIGHT & SHAUN O DOWD

For generations, Cox’s Cross Carnival and the famous All-Ireland bonfire attracted thousands of visitors from across Roscommon, Leitrim, and the surrounding counties. From the 1940s through to the 1970s, this annual celebration became one of the most anticipated social events in the region.

Bonfire Night and the Carnival at Cox’s Cross soon gained a reputation throughout the country, developing into a vibrant hub of activity and entertainment. People travelled from near and far to enjoy evenings filled with music, dancing, and singing, featuring some of Ireland’s top showbands and performers. Over the years, many lasting friendships and love stories began at Cox’s Cross. At the heart of this remarkable event were Phyllis Glancy O’Dowd and her husband John, who lived at Cox’s Cross. Deeply committed to community life, they worked tirelessly alongside a dedicated local committee to ensure the continued success of the bonfire and carnival, creating memories that have endured for decades.

This week, Aughrim- Kilmore Development Association invite the public to join in as it celebrates and remembers the people who made these special occasions possible. A commemorative evening will take place at Cox’s Cross on Saturday, June 20th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. The event will feature a variety of local musical talent, along with activities for children, making it a free and enjoyable family evening for all ages. The celebrations will continue from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Dangan Community Centre, where special guest, Shaun O’Dowd, who spent his younger years living at Cox’s Cross, will provide an evening of entertainment and nostalgia. Everyone aged 18 and over is welcome to attend this part of the evening. Tickets are €10 each and are available now from Gerry Tiernan and Trevor Hunt 086 8393800/087 9652581. Come along and help celebrate the rich heritage, cherished memories, and community spirit of Cox’s Cross.
