Local Notes: Keep Fit Classes, Windmill Classic, Parks on the Air
Elphin ladies rounders team travelled to Michael Glavey’s for their second game in the intermediate championship, and from the throw-in it was clear that Elphin came with confidence and determination. Showing great skill and teamwork throughout the game, the team put in a strong performance from start to finish. Their hard work paid off as they came away with the win and another important result on the board . Well done to all involved and thank you to Glavey’s for their hospitality after the game.
The death occurred suddenly at his home on May 20th of Mr Padraic Nolan, Lisnagard, Elphin. Reunited in heaven with his mother Della, father Jimmy, brother-in-law John, niece Joanna and nephew Martin. Padraic will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving sisters, Dolores (O’Connor), Mary (Togher) and Matilda (Fallon); brother, Marty; brothers-in-law, Michael John and Mattie; Marty’s partner, Belinda; Aunt Phyllis, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Following Funeral Mass at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Kilmaryal on Saturday Padraic was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
The death occurred on Sunday, May 17th in the loving care of the staff of Sonas Nursing Home, Cloverhill of Mrs Marian Murray, (née Conry), Lugboy, Elphin. Marian will be sadly missed by her cousins, nieces-in-law, nephews-in-law, relatives and friends. Predeceased by her husband, Bertie and brothers Jimmy & Marty. Following Funeral Mass in St. Patrick's Church, Elphin, burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
Local artist Nickie Harrington’s work has been selected for this year’s Art Riddler exhibition. Nickie is looking forward to catching up with everyone on the opening night. The exhibition opens May 28th and runs until May 31st at One Charlemont Square, Dublin 2.
Tidy Towns member meet up at day centre polytunnel every Saturday at 10.30 a.m.. All welcome, even if you can only come now and again for half hour, every little counts.
Keep fit classes with activator poles continue in Elphin Community Centre on Thursdays at 9 p.m.. Come along and get fit for summer. Feel good, stay active. A warm welcome promised.
The Windmill Classic takes place on Sunday, June 7th. The 105km cycle starts at 9 a.m. and the 55km at 9.30 a.m. from Elphin Community Centre. Enquiries to 086 3530113.
As a follow on from the recent Mills on the Air event at the Elphin Windmill, the Shannon Basin Radio Club has been successful in having the Palace Park, which is located across the road from the Windmill, designated a location for "Parks on the Air". This should result in having ham radio operators from all over the world visiting the Palace Park and making radio contacts from there. The next day centre outing is Wednesday, May 27th. The group will pay a visit to the Fr. Peyton Memorial Centre, Attymass Ballina. Fr Peyton staged massive Rosary rallies in key cities of the world and extensively utilised his ministry of binding families through prayer under the family rosary. He was a popular and charismatic figure in Latin America and the Philippines, where he promoted the rosary and was known for his strong Irish accent. The group will be attending Mass on arrival and lunch is included, €30 per head including lunch and transport. The Traditional Irish music sessions are continuing each Tuesday in the Tower Inn at 8.30 p.m. with a great mix of musicians and instruments, which combines culture and heritage with an enjoyable nights entertainment, so whether you are a musician or listener come along to the Tower Inn and support this great event.
The next singers’ night in the Tower Inn will be on Sunday, May 31st starting at 8.30 p.m.. This is an event that will prove to be worth attending whether you are a singer or listener as all genre of songs will be catered for.

The death occurred on Monday, May 18th, at Sligo University Hospital, of Mr Frank Kelly, Croghan village and formerly of Annaghmore, Strokestown. Predeceased by his wife, Maura (née McNamara), and brothers, Johnny and Peter, Frank will be sadly missed by his brother-in-law, Jim McNamara, sister-in-law, Kathleen, nephews, niece, relatives, neighbours and friends. Reposal took place at Brady's Funeral Home, Elphin on Wednesday, May 20th. Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Michael's Church, Croghan on Thursday followed by interment in Eastersnow cemetery.
A meeting of Croghan Parish Pastoral Council will take place in Drumlion Parochial House on Tuesday, June 9th at 7.30 p.m..
Happy and excited pupils, and teachers, in Croghan and Woodbrook National Schools were delighted to welcome and view all the Connacht trophies won by Roscommon teams in recent weeks. Thanks to all involved in organising the visit to the schools and to the local members of the winning teams for attending.
A Mass for Pioneers will be celebrated on Friday, June 12th (Feast of Sacred Heart) in St. Michael's Church, Croghan at 7.30 p.m.. All are welcome.
Bingo takes place in the Patrician Hall, Cortober on Sundays at 8 p.m.. Big cash prizes to be won. All welcome.
