The 8th year of parkrun was celebrated in Strokestown last weekend. Thanks to all who showed up to run/walk and enjoy the celebrations and treats afterwards. A total of 39 participants joined in for the 5k, with some new faces from Mullagh, County Cavan and Leicester, England. The first finisher across the line was John Feeney, coming in at 21:08, followed by Cian Crosbie at 21:40. The first two ladies in were Gillian Regan at 26:12 and Aoibhinn Lavin at 26:55. Well done everyone on your speedy times. Thanks as well to volunteer Evan Quigley who took the photographs this week, and to the event director Lesley Gilmore, who baked a delicious birthday cake for all to enjoy. Looking forward to another event next weekend.

The Strokestown support group of the Mayo/ Roscommon Hospice will host a coffee morning at SuperValu, Elphin Street, from 9 a.m., on Friday, September25th. All proceeds go directly to Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. Every cup counts. Everyone welcome.
MS Ireland is hosting a free information fair for people with MS and other neurological conditions and their carers at the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon, on Thursday, September 24th from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., with a wide variety of statutory, community and voluntary services in attendance. Irish language classes will commence on Wednesday, October 7th from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Cruachan Ai Visitor Centre, Tulsk (F45 HH51). This course is suitable for all levels with an emphasis on conversational Irish. Beginners are welcome. It will run every Wednesday for six weeks. Kay Furey wishes to thank all her family, friends, colleagues and neighbours for their wonderful, good wishes on the occasion of her recent 70th retirement party in the Percy French Hotel.
The death took place recently at St. James' Hospital, Dublin, of Mr Martin Boylan of Beatty Grove, Celbridge, County Kildare, husband of Mrs Mary Boylan (nee Collins), formerly of Ballybeg, Strokestown. A native of Emyvale, County Monaghan, he was son of the late Mr John Boylan and of the late Mrs Rose Boylan. He and his wife owned a holiday home at Ballybeg and were frequent visitors to the locality. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church, Celbridge, and the interment followed in Strokestown Cemetery. Fr. Eamonn O'Connor, P.P., (Strokestown) officiated at the graveside. A rendition of the ballad, ‘On Raglan Road’ authored by fellow Monaghan native, Patrick Kavanagh, followed. He is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Eoin; brothers, Gerard and Sean; sisters, Mary, Bernadette and Claire; sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, extended family and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
The death took place recently of Mr Tony O'Connor of Shankill, Dublin 18, husband of the late Mrs Anne O'Connor (nee Fallon), formerly of Church Street, Strokestown) He was a native of Ballymote. He was brother-in-law of Miss Mary Fallon (Church Street). He was a frequent visitor to the town over the years. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Anne's Church, Shankill, and was followed by a private cremation ceremony. He is survived by his children, Tony, Eva (Mitchell) and Niamh; son-in-law, Ben; grandchildren, Matthew, Catherine, Phoebe, Peter, Grace and Lucy; sisters-in-law, nephews and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
In the Kilglass Gaels Lotto held on September 12th the numbers drawn were: 1, 6, 13, 26 Bonus Number 22. There was no jackpot winner. There was one Match 3 number winner of €200 Oonagh Cox . Next week's jackpot is €2,500 for four correct numbers, €6,500 for four correct numbers plus Bonus Number. Next draw takes place in the clubrooms on Saturday, September 26th.
Progressive 25 continues in Kilglass GAA Centre on Tuesdays at the earlier time of 8.30 p.m.. Last week's winners were joint 1st, James Owens and Tommy Flynn; joint 2nd, Oliver Compton and Mary Dolan; raffle, John Compton. New players welcome.
