Local Notes: Lotto results, Healthy Club challenge and recent bereavements

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, January 3rd last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 2, 4, 27 and 35. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were Mike Duignan, Micheal Finneran, Thomas Mahon, Elizabeth O’Connor and Carol Shannon. The next draw (jackpot €6,100) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, January 10th. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.
Congratulations to Daniel Carney, son of Michael and Colette Carney, Portahard, Frenchpark who recently graduated from University of Galway with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree.
Mr Michael Kelly, Dalton Terrace, Ballaghaderreen and late of Ardsoran, Killaraght passed away, suddenly yet peacefully, at home on Thursday, December 25th last. Predeceased by his wife Helen in November 2025, his father Michael, mother Mary Ann and his brother Eamonn, he will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his sons, Michael John, Shane and Nicholas, his brothers, Padraic and Tommy, his sisters, Margaret and Anne, extended family, relatives, friends and colleagues. His remains were removed from Kilgarriff’s Funeral Home to St. Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen on Sunday evening week last. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, December 29th last, Michael was laid to rest in Kilcolman Cemetery.
The peaceful death occurred at her home of Mrs Teresa Carney, Behy, Boyle, and Frenchpark on Saturday, January 3rd last. In her 93rd year, Teresa (née Durr) was predeceased by her husband, Thomas and is deeply regretted by her loving family, her son, Tommy; daughters, Mary and Margaret; her sister, Margaret; grandchildren, Jack and Rose; sons-in-law, Seamus and Tom; nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Her remains will be removed to St. Joseph’s Church, Boyle on this Thursday, January 8th arriving for prayers at 7 p.m.. As per Teresa’s wish, her funeral Mass will take place, privately on Friday.
The death took place peacefully of Mrs Evelyn McGowan, Whitehall, Tarmonbarry on Sunday, December 21st last in Mullingar Hospital. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Michael John, and her sons Benedict & Padraic. Aunt of Daniel Carroll, Knockroe, Ballinagare, the late Mrs McGowan (née Fallon) will be also be sadly missed by her daughters, Geraldine, Gabrielle and Nuala; son-in-law, Kevin; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, Ethel, Margaret and Charlotte, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends. Following Requiem Mass in the Sacred Heart Church, Whitehall on Wednesday, December 24th last, the funeral proceeded to Ballymacormack Cemetery, Longford.
Pray for the repose of the souls of Mrs Peggy Conefrey, Sandymount, Dublin (sister of the late Fr. James Creaton and the late Fr. Sean Creaton); Mr John Towey, Crenane, Ballaghaderreen; Ms. Mary Flanagan, Trien, Castlerea; Mr John Doherty, Carrick, Ballinlough and Mr Billy Bonds, London, England. May they rest in peace.
Masses will be held in Tibohine at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (6th), in Ballinagare at 7 p.m. on Friday (9th), Tibohine at 6.30 p.m. & Ballinagare at 8 p.m. on Saturday (10th) and in Frenchpark at 10 a.m. and Fairymount at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, January 11th next.

Tulsk GAA Club’s AGM will take place on Saturday, January 17th in the clubrooms. Thanks to all the community for their support on and off the field in the year gone by, including the Waxathon fundraiser and Tulsk to Lapland Challenge held over the Christmas holiday period.
The GAA Healthy Club’s Step Challenge begins on Wednesday, January 7th and is now available to select on the Irish Life app. Once you choose Tulsk GAA/LGFA/Camogie as your home club, all your steps done in your own time will count towards our total. There will be more information for group walks later in the week. The club is aiming for 4,000 km to be entered into the draws for three €2,500 prizes in Connacht and an overall raffle prize of €30,000. This is a wonderful way for anyone—near or far—to support the club. One can also add their steps manually, no watch needed. The challenge ends Thursday, February 11th 2026.
The Lourdes Assisted Pilgrims Group in Strokestown is hosting a Table Quiz in the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown on Friday, January 23rd at 8.30 p.m.. Tables of four are €40. A raffle will take place on the night and finger food will also be served.
The next meeting of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological will be its AGM on Tuesday, February 9th in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre from 8pm.

In the Kilglass Gaels Lotto held on January 3rd the numbers drawn were 8, 9, 12, 25 Bonus Number 5. There was no jackpot winner: There were two Match 3 number winners of €100 each Frank Cox, Orla Kelly. Next jackpot is €8,700 for four correct numbers, €12,700 for four correct numbers plus Bonus Number. Next draw takes place in the Clubrooms on Saturday, January 10th.

The death occurred recently of Kathleen Smith, New Rooskey, Roosky at Drumderrig House Nursing Home, Boyle. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Michael; children, Deirdre (James) . Fiona (Bernard), Michelle (Larry), Finbarr (Sandra), Mark (Siobhan), brothers, relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.
Tai Chi Class starts on Thursday, January 8th from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Community Centre, Roosky and will run for six weeks.
