Local Notes: New York honours, heritage society, bake sale, Easter camps and dancing

Masses and ceremonies will be held in Tibohine at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (26th), in Frenchpark at 7 p.m. and Fairymount at 8 p.m. on Holy Thursday, in Tibohine at 2 p.m. and in Frenchpark at 5 p.m. on Good Friday, in Tibohine at 6.30 p.m. and in Ballinagare at 8 p.m. on Easter Saturday (30th) and in Frenchpark at 10 a.m. and in Fairymount at 11.30 a.m. on Easter Sunday. Fr. Michéal Donnelly, Canon Liam Devine and Sr. Elizabeth Carroll would like to wish a happy and peaceful Easter to all in the Parish.

LATE MR JOHN HESTER 

The death occurred peacefully of Mr John (Batty) Hester, Rathfarnham, Dublin and formerly of Frenchpark and An Garda Síochána on Friday, March 22nd last at Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin. He will be sadly missed by his loving family, his wife, Margaret (née Cardiff); sons Cathal, Neil and Ruairi; brothers, sisters, extended family, relatives, neighbours, colleagues, friends and rugby family. His remains will be removed to Mount Argus Church on this Tuesday (today) arriving for 11.30 a.m. Mass, followed thereafter to Kilmashogue Cemetery.

LATE MISS PAULINE QUEENAN 

The peaceful death took place of Miss Pauline Queenan, Virginia, County Cavan and late of Emlagh, Kingsland on Thursday, March 21st last at Cavan Hospital. Sister of Gerry Queenan, Frenchpark, Pauline is also survived by her sisters, Una, Monica and Mary; brother, Vincent; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends. Her remains were removed to St. Joseph's Church, Boyle. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Saturday, March 23rd last, the funeral proceeded to Eastersnow Cemetery.

BEREAVEMENTS 

Pray for the repose of the souls of Mr John Bertie McDonagh, Cloonloo, Boyle; Mr Jimmy Hynes, Creagh, Ballinasloe; Mr Michael Kelly, St. Patrick's Street, Castlerea and Mrs Kathleen Newton, Drumlion, Carrick-on-Shannon. May they rest in peace.

MS COLLECTION 

A church gate collection, in aid of the Roscommon branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, will be held this Easter weekend (March 30th/31st) at all four local churches Please support this most worthy charity.

LOTTO 

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, March 23rd last. There was no winner of the jackpot. The numbers drawn were 3, 9, 18 and 34. The next draw (jackpot €3,400) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on Saturday, March 30th next. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.

CROCHET CLASSES 

An eight-week crochet class will begin on April 10th next, taking place on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cornerstone in Frenchpark (F45P928). Each person must bring along their own No. 4 crochet hook and double knit wool of choice. Places are limited. To sign up, pop into the Cornerstone or contact on Facebook.

A full library service is up and running in Unit 1B, SuperValu, Ballaghaderreen. Opening hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Computers, scanning, printing also available.

TULSK 

NEW YORK HONOURS FOR LOCAL MAN 

Congratulations to John Kenny, a native of Castleteehan, Castleplunkett, who was honoured at the recent Roscommon Society of New York annual dinner for his sterling service to the diaspora community in his adopted home. John was a member of the Tulsk team that won the 1984 Intermediate Football Final before emigrating to his adopted home. All of the local community congratulate John on his fine honour.

CAMPAIGN LAUNCH 

A campaign launch for Sean Moylan will be held in O’Connor’s Bar this Easter Saturday, March 30th in O’Connor’s Bar, Tulsk. Sean was recently selected as a Fianna Fail candidate to contest the next election for the Boyle Electoral Area. There will be music on the night for what is sure to be a fun and enjoyable occasion.

EASTER CEREMONIES 

This week is Holy Week with a range of ceremonies taking place across the parish. Mass on Holy Thursday will take place at 8 p.m. in St. Paul’s Church, Kilmurry while observances take place on Good Friday at 3 p.m. in the Church of St.’s Eithne and Fidelma, Tulsk. Later that evening, Stations of the Cross will take place in St. Catherine’s Church, Killina. Mass on Easter Saturday evening will take place in Tulsk Church at 9 p.m..

MONTHLY DANCE 

The monthly dance in Kilmurry Hall continues on Sunday, March 7th with music by Colm Bourke. Dancing from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.. Admission €10, come along for a great night of dancing.

COUNTY SENIOR SCOR FINAL 

County Senior Scor finals take place in Kilmurry Hall on Good Friday, March 29th. Question time at 6.30 p.m.. Stage events at 8 p.m. A great night of Irish culture promised.

TULSK HISTORY SOCIETY 

The AGM of Tulsk History Society will take place on Thursday, April 4th – new members are welcome. All proceeds raised on the night will go towards the upkeep of the society. The latest e-newsletter will be circulated in this month and includes stories on the Tulsk Fife of Drum Band of the late 1800s, the history of Castleplunkett School, a focus on some census data (1901-1911) and a look at the story of the Dowell family, who have a vault in Tulsk Cemetery. Preparations are also underway for Heritage Week 2024.

PITCH FUNDRAISING 

Tulsk GAA Club wishes to thank all those who have donated to the current fundraising drive to raise €160,000 towards the new pitch.

EASTER GAA CAMP 

Tulsk GAA Club is hosting an Easter Camp from today Tuesday, March 26th to Thursday, March 28th inclusive from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. daily. At the camp there will be lots of fun football and camogie activities. The cost of enrolment is €25 per child or €40 per family. The camp is open to all primary school children and participants do not have to be club members to take part.

PERCY FRENCH 

Plans are currently being considered to reform a new local Percy French Society. An informal meeting of local residents took place recently in Killina School and a working group has been set up to consider how best to commemorate and celebrate the legacy of the iconic songwriter and artist, who was born in Clooneyquinn, 170 years ago this year. A further meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 27th at 8.30 p.m. once again in Killina National School in an effort to gauge further interest among the local community. Meanwhile, a night of music and song commemorating French’s legacy will take place in Strokestown Famine Museum on Wednesday, May 1st, hosted by the Leitrim Percy French Society. MND TABLE QUIZ 

A Table Quiz will be held on Friday, April 26th organised by members of Roscommon County Council’s staff Social and Sports Club in the ballroom of Abbey Hotel, Roscommon, at 8 p.m.. Proceeds raised will go towards a special 'Go Fund Me' page to support Nicola Murphy who was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Tables of four are priced €40 while a raffle will also be held on the night. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION AGM 

The AGM of the Chestnut Grove Residents Association took place last week in the Macra Hall. All matters relating to the upkeep of the estate, including a proposed annual programme of grass cutting was discussed. Calls will be made to residents in due course seeking a contribution – the support of residents is greatly appreciated.

BAKE SALE 

The Parents Association of Killina National School will host a bake sale on this Easter Sunday, March 31st from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Macra Hall, Tulsk. Funds raised will go directly to the school upkeep.

PRAYERS RECITED 

Prayers were recited at weekend Masses following the death of Bridget Kelly, late of Coracorkey, Legan, County Longford. The deceased passed away in the care of the staff of Tullamore Hospital and in the company of her family. The deceased was a sister of Margaret Neary, Tulsk and was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth, sisters, Mary Shanley (Strokestown) and Eilish and her brother John. The deceased is also survived by her brothers, Joe and Michael, sister-in-law Nora, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends. The deceased reposed at Our Lady's Manor, Edgeworthstown, with Funeral Mass yesterday (Monday) in St. Mary's Church, Legan followed by burial afterwards in Kilglass Cemetery.
