Over 40 tonnes of illegally dumped waste removed in County Roscommon

More than 40 tonnes of illegally dumped waste have been removed from three locations in County Roscommon as part of a major clean-up effort funded through the Anti-Dumping Initiative 2026.
Roscommon County Council's Environment Department recently completed clean-up operations at Float Road and Drumalassen in Ballaghaderreen and Doneen, Ballinameen, where significant quantities of waste had been dumped illegally.
The largest operation took place at Float Road, Ballaghaderreen, where 30 tonnes of waste were removed and disposed of at authorised waste facilities. The dumped material included agricultural waste, construction and demolition debris, and household items, all of which posed a threat to the local environment and surrounding countryside.
A further eight tonnes of waste were cleared from Drumalassen, Ballaghaderreen, while five tonnes were removed from Doneen, Ballinameen. Similar types of waste were found at both locations, including agricultural materials, construction waste and household refuse.
In total, the three clean-up operations resulted in the removal of 43 tonnes of waste from rural areas, highlighting the ongoing challenge of illegal dumping and its impact on local communities, wildlife habitats and the environment.
Roscommon County Council is reminding householders and businesses that "Your waste is your responsibility." The council has urged the public to ensure waste is only handed over to authorised waste collectors.
It is a criminal offence to give waste to an unauthorised collector, with penalties on conviction including a fine of up to €5,000 and/or 12 months' imprisonment.
The clean-up works were carried out with support from the Anti-Dumping Initiative 2026, which assists local authorities in tackling illegal dumping and restoring affected sites across the country.
