Roscommon golfer turns professional ahead of Irish Open debut

Roscommon golfer Thomas Higgins has announced the next major step in his career after officially turning professional and securing a dream debut at this week's Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg.
The former amateur standout revealed the news on social media, describing it as a moment he had been working towards for many years.
“I’m incredibly proud to announce that I have officially turned professional and will make my professional debut this week at the Irish Open,” he said.
Higgins paid tribute to the people and organisations who have supported his development throughout his amateur career, thanking his family and friends, Golf Ireland, Clemson University and coach Michael Kennelly for their guidance and encouragement.
“This is a moment I’ve worked towards for a long time, and I’m extremely grateful to everyone who has helped me get here,” he said.
In his message, he said: “While this week marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, the work is only getting started. Having already progressed through Stage 1 of DP World Tour Q-School, I’ll compete at Stage 2 at the end of October as I continue working towards earning my place on tour. Proud of the journey so far and incredibly excited for what’s ahead. Time to get started.”
Last month, Higgins enjoyed another stellar success after he won the AIG Irish Men's Amateur Close Championship.
