Alleged assault of referee at match in Athlone being investigated by Gardai

Gardaí are investigating the alleged assault of the referee during a soccer match in Athlone.
A soccer club has admitted that the actions of an individual member were “completely unacceptable” following the alleged assault of a referee during a match in Athlone last weekend.
The second round Counties Cup match between former Roscommon and District League side, St. Peter's FC, and Highfield United at McCarthy Park, Athlone, was abandoned following the alleged assault on Sunday afternoon.
A statement by Highfield United — based in Birr, County Offaly — on Facebook said that it found the actions of an individual club member during the fixture to be “completely unacceptable.”
“These actions do not reflect the values of our club.
“We are committed to fostering a safe, respectful environment for everyone involved in the sport.
“Immediate steps are being taken to address this situation," the club statement concluded.
Gardai have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
