Castlerea Community School was delighted to host the recent Darkness into Light Walk.

The idea to organise a walk locally was first mooted by the Transition Year class of 2016 and since then students have worked in partnership with Yvonne Ryan, Castlerea Community School and Gareth Scahill, Castlerea Towns Team to organise the event each year.

“It was wonderful to have the opportunity to host the event and to see such a large turnout for such a lovely sunrise walk through the beautiful grounds of the Demesne. The committee was extremely busy on the days leading to this event as the Home Economics Department, led by Rebecca Brehony, prepared freshly baked refreshments, and the Art Department, led by Pauline Connaughton, decorated the school assembly beautifully,” said Yvonne Ryan.

The school grounds were decorated in a sea of lanterns and fairy lights, led by caretaker Eddie Rowntree while Beth Taylor worked with Second Year students to plant flowers symbolising hope.

As always Yvonne Hanbury worked on light and sound and Deirdre Collins with her team organised the catering.

“A great team effort ensured the success of the event. Our thanks to Castlerea Gardaí, Civil Defence and local people for stewarding. Thanks also to Olivia Prendergast, EmpowerFit Health and Wellness studio who led the warmup prior to the walk. Finally, a huge well done to the hardworking TY and Fifth Year students who helped,” said Ms Ryan.
