Connolly is new Cathaoirleach of Athlone Municipal District

Outgoing Cathaoirleach of Athlone MD, Cllr John Keogh welcomes the newly elected Cathaoirleach Cllr Dominick Connolly.

The new Cathaoirleach of the Athlone Municipal District is Fine Gael councillor Domnick Connolly.

He was elected at this morning’s AGM held in the council chamber.

The Fine Gael councillor was proposed by party colleague, Cllr Valerie Duffy and seconded by Cllr Laurence Fallon.

Cllr Connolly said that he looked forward to working with his fellow councillors and the staff of the council.

Independent councillor Emer Kelly was elected as Leas Cathaoirleach. She was proposed by Cllr Fallon and seconded by Cllr Duffy.

The Ballyforan native expressed her gratitude to her colleagues on her election, and said she looked forward to overseeing “projects progress” in the Athlone MD area.

Outgoing Cathaoirleach, Cllr John Keogh was praised by fellow councillors. He wished both Cllrs Connolly and Kelly well in their new positions.

Reflecting on his term, he spoke of the “ups and downs”, and remembered, in particular, the late Cllr John Naughten.

Areas of focus outlined for the next year at the meeting were the development of Monksland and Creagh, cooperating with TII on the dangerous junctions on the N61, and progressing the masterplan set out last week out by Sean Mulryan for Athlone.
