After 26 years in business in Castlerea the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice, has this evening announced his decision to close his Market Fresh fruit and vegetable shop in the town.

“After 26 wonderful years in business I have made the decision to close the doors of Market Fresh,” said Cllr Fitzmaurice.

“I know this news will come as a shock to many, but after much deliberation I am making the decision to close the shop as it has become increasingly difficult to survive as a small business in an already overcrowded market,” he said.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to my many loyal customers and friends for your unwavering support, kindness and loyalty over the last 26 years. You have been the heart of this business and the reason why I enjoyed going to work every day. I certainly will miss the daily chats and interactions with you all in the shop.

“While it is bittersweet to say goodbye, I look forward to the next chapter in life. I want to assure you all that I will remain a very visible presence in our community and will continue to work tirelessly for you all as a public representative.

“Thanks to the loyal staff who have worked with me over the years and a special mention to my wife, Ann and our children Ella and Sean for their support and help during our time in business,” said Cllr Fitzmaurice.

Market Fresh will close officially on Saturday, March 1st.

Speaking to the Roscommon Herald, Cllr Fitzmaurice acknowledged that it was getting "harder and harder" to run a small business given the nature of competition in the fruit and vegetable market.

“It has been something that has been on my mind for a long time,” he said. "Costs across the board for small businesses like mine have soared and the profit margins are shrinking fast for fresh produce. It’s easy for major supermarkets to sell fruit as vegetables as lost leaders, which they do to draw people in, but that makes it more difficult for small businesses like mine.” Starting out in business 26 years ago at the Square in Castlerea, Paschal moved his Market Fresh business to Main Street nearly 21 years ago.

“I suppose the reality of being in business is that things can change dramatically over time. Twenty six years ago when I started out it was much easier to do business. I will be sad to leave the Main Street, but I want to assure people that I will still be actively involved in the community and I will be devoting my time to community work and my work as a county councillor."
