Council decides not to endorse any candidate for presidential election

Presidential hopefuls made their pitches for the Áras at today's special meeting of Roscommon County Council.

Roscommon councillors have decided not to nominate any Independent candidate for the presidential election.

At a special meeting of the local authority today, Monday, no proposal was tabled by elected members to support any candidate.

Fourteen of the 20 eligible candidates who previously contacted the council made presentations before the special meeting, which took four hours.

One of those candidates, Conor McGregor, withdrew his presidential bid earlier this morning.

Those setting out their stall in the council chamber today were hoping to secure the support of Roscommon council as one of the four local authorities needed to secure a presidential nomination.
