Castlerea councillor Gareth Scahill has been appointed to Seanad Éireann by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

The Fine Gael councillor, who was elected for the first time to Roscommon County Council in last year's local elections, is among the Taoiseach’s eleven nominees to the Upper House.

Cllr Scahill will serve in the Seanad for the next five years.

He was born and raised in Castlerea and works in the family business, Scahill Electrical and Household.  

The full list of senators appointed by the Taoiseach are: Gareth Scahill, Joe Flaherty, Dee Ryan, Alison Comyn, Anne Rabbitte, Lorraine Clifford Lee, Imelda Goldsboro, Nikki Bradley, Manus Boyle, Noel O'Donovan, and Evanne Ní Chuilinn.
