St. Nathy’s College in Ballaghaderreen is set to replace 236 school windows in a project estimated to cost more than €0.5m.

The secondary school has advertised a tender for conservation architectural consultancy services to replace the sliding sash/casement windows, which date back many years.

The windows in question are on the garrison building on the school grounds along with the two extensions which were built in the 1920's and 1940's. The building is a protected structure and the works will extend to the majority of the old timber windows.

The tender documents note that the majority of these windows were fitted when the school was built between the 1920 and 1940s.

Some of the casement type windows replaced the original windows in the Garrison building and it’s estimated this window replacement work happened in the 1960s or possibly earlier.

The documents also outline that constant remedial work has been carried out over the years, with the windows refurbished in-house as much as possible.

The tender information suggests that the total cost of the replacement works at St. Nathy's College could be in the region of €560,000. The college has already secured a Department of Education grant of €500,000 for this significant project.

The closing date for receipt of tenders is 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 25th.

Contract duration is set at six months.
