Court hears man was victim of scam

A man who thought he was insured when stopped by gardaí was actually being scammed, Castlerea District Court has heard.
Jefferson Souza Lago with an address at 18 Sli na Struthan, Ballinlough was stopped by Garda Enda Keane on September 12th last at Main Street, Castlerea.
Judge James Faughnan was told by Solicitor Mary Mullarkey that her client thought he was insured. He was part of a WhatsApp group and had paid €810 for documentation.
She said this was part of a scam and her client did “not have great English at the time.”
The judge said that he is supporting a move in Galway where an honoree council is educating people to understand insurance and it is “certainly working.”
The court heard the defendant had needed someone to help him with English and in ten years he had never been in court and works full time.
The judge imposed a fine of €200 for failing to have insurance.
