Gardaí in Roscommon are investigating the theft of thousands of euro worth of power tools from two different locations in the county.
On September 11th between 4 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. a silver Land Cruiser jeep was broken into at Main Street, Athleague. A passenger window and lock were smashed and various power tools to the value of €2,450 were taken from rear of the jeep. Gardaí in Roscommon are endeavouring to establish if the occupants of a blue Saab were involved in this incident.
Also September 11th at approx. 7.35 p.m. power tools with a value in excess of €1,200 were stolen from an unattended locked Renault Master van at Circular Road, Roscommon. The suspects were driving a blue Saab, bearing false registration plates.
Meanwhile on September 18th at approximately 12.50 p.m. the occupant of a blue Mazda attempted to gain entry using an angle grinder to a number of vans at Circular Road, Roscommon. No entry was gained and no items were taken. The person was disturbed and fled the scene.
According to Sergeant Damien Bartley, the Crime Prevention Officer for Longford Roscommon vans are often targeted by thieves for the tools stored inside. “If you have to leave tools in a van overnight, it's a good idea to mark them clearly with your name / company name and address using paint pens and seal with a clear lacquer spray. Alternatively, you can use a variety of other property marking systems. Items that are clearly marked are less desirable and more difficult to sell on,” he said.
Sergeant Bartley added: “Consider using a lockable cabinet within your van to store tools – a number of security rated products are available. Small cameras are also designed to record inside vehicles. You can also take photographs of items of value, make a note of the serial numbers and consider registering them online at the Garda Property App.”
Anyone with information about the power tool thefts is asked to contact Roscommon Garda Station on 0906638300 or the Garda Confidential line at 1800 666 111.
