Local Fianna Fáil TD, Dr Martin Daly, has given his backing to former Dublin football manager Jim Gavin in the race to secure the party’s presidential nomination.

Announced his support for Jim Gavin as the party’s candidate in the forthcoming presidential election, Dr Daly said that “Jim Gavin’s record of service to the State and to Irish society is exemplary”.

“As a Commandant in the Defence Forces, he represented Ireland with distinction on United Nations peacekeeping missions,” the Ballygar man said. “In civilian life, he has continued that commitment through his leadership roles in aviation safety, community development, and public policy.” Dr Daly added that Mr Gavin’s contribution to Irish sport has been equally significant.

“ As the most successful Gaelic football manager in history, he led the Dublin senior team through a historic period of achievement, distinguished not only by unprecedented success on the field but by the organisation, composure, discipline, and clarity he brought to the role,” the TD said.

Mr Gavin has also chaired the Citizens’ Assembly on the future of local government in Dublin, led the North-East Inner City Taskforce, and served with the Irish Aviation Authority, demonstrating an ability to build consensus and deliver results across a range of complex national issues.

Dr Daly added: “Fianna Fáil is fortunate to have two high-calibre figures seeking the party’s nomination. However, I believe Jim Gavin offers a unique opportunity to broaden our appeal beyond the party’s traditional base, particularly in Dublin, and to represent Ireland at home and abroad with credibility and distinction. For these reasons, I am proud to endorse his candidacy. I also want to extend my very best wishes to Billy Kelleher, whose long record of service to the party and to Ireland commands great respect.”
