The issue of dangerous trees posing a risk to the public has been highlighted by a county councillor.

Independent councillor Tony Waldron said that 90% of fallen trees that he came across during the last storm had fallen on to the roadside.

He said many trees were also covered in ivy, hiding the extent of the risk to the public. A rotting tree was recently felled by a local farmer in the Ballintubber area for safety reasons.

“We have many trees like this across the county and country and now is the time to address this problem. One farmer also recently felled ten trees, and there are also a lot of trees running alongside council properties that need to be removed,” he warned.

Cllr Waldron said that local authorities like Roscommon County Council needed significant funds from central Government to address the widespread issue of dangerous trees, including those with Ash Dieback.
