A design team for a new 50-bed psychiatric unit at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH) is expected to be appointed by the end of March, the Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed.

A HSE spokesperson outlined to the Herald that the tender for the appointment of a design team for the Roscommon Adult Acute Mental Health Unit (AAMHU) project is currently open.

“It is envisaged that the design team for the AAMHU will be appointed by the end of March 2026. They will then commence on the preliminary design phase for the new facility," said the HSE.

The existing 24-bed psychiatric unit, located on the ground floor at the rear of RUH, has faced significant criticism over its outdated infrastructure and compliance issues.

On foot of a freedom of information request from the Herald earlier this year, the HSE revealed that the original business plan for a new 35-bed unit at RUH was revised and replaced with proposals for a 50-bed facility.

The new bed capacity figure is taking into account future planning and population expansion requirements.
