Drama festival brings ‘vibrancy and excitement’ to Roscommon Town

This year's Roscommon Drama Festival, which will run from tonight, March 6th, to Saturday, March 14th, promises a range of amateur theatre to suit all tastes.

The festival was officially launched at Aras an Chontae recently by the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Cllr Liam Callaghan, who said that the event brings “vibrancy and excitement” to Roscommon Town.

The festival kicks off at 8pm this evening with Ballyturk written by Enda Walsh and presented by Kilmeen Drama Group from Cork. March 7th sees Corofin Dramatic Society on stage performing the Margaret Edson play Wit.

The Nenagh Players present The Salvage Shop by Jim Nolan on Sunday, March 8th. The Dunmore Amateur Dramatic Society has unfortunately been forced to withdraw. Irish actor Gerry Farrel, playwright and mental health professional will present his one man show I had to go to Counselling, in its place on Monday, March 9th.

On Tuesday, the Upstage Players from Claremorris present The Year of the Hiker. There is no performance on Wednesday, March 11th.

Glenamaddy Players will perform Chapatti by Christian O’Reilly on Thursday, March 12th. Kilmuckridge Players will stage the ever popular The Communication Cord by Brian Friel on Friday 13th.

The "feast of drama" will conclude on Saturday 14th with Sive by John B Keane followed by the awards ceremony.

The launch night coincided with the presentation of prizes in the children’s short story writing competition. The competition was open to Fifth and Sixth class pupils in the Roscommon area. Mairead Nally had a very special word for “all the budding writers” of the future who entered the competition.

Best Overall prize went to Makayla Carroll from Ballagh National School. First overall winner in 6th Class went to Julia Bak from Ballagh NS. Cora Mulry from Tisrara NS. took home first place for a Fifth Class student.
