An Garda Síochána conducts a number of high profile National Slowdown Days every year.

A driver on the M6 in Athlone was detected travelling 142km/h in a 120km/h zone on National Slowdown Day today.

An Garda Síochána, supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders, is conducting a national speed enforcement operation - National Slowdown Day – which runs for 24 hours until midnight tonight, Wednesday.

Up until 5 p.m. today, An Garda Síochána, along with GoSafe Mobile and Static Safety Cameras, have detected a total of 484 vehicles travelling in excess of the speed limit.

The aim of National Slowdown Days is to remind motorists of the dangers of speeding; encourage a national conversation on the impact of speeding; to increase overall compliance with speed limits in place nationwide and to deter and detect those that are intent on driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.
