Eugene Murphy loses Seanad seat
Former Senator Eugene Murphy
Outgoing senator Eugene Murphy’s bid to be re-elected to the Seanad was unsuccessful this evening.
In a highly competitive panel of 11 seats and 28 candidates, the Scramogue man and former Fianna Fáil TD was eliminated following the eight count. He had received a total vote value of 17,655 or 18 per cent of the vote.
Mr Murphy was first elected to Roscommon County Council in 1985 and successfully won a Dáil seat for FF in 2016. After losing his seat in 2020, he was elected to the Seanad on the agricultural panel.
Before the Seanad election, Mr Murphy acknowledged that retaining his seat would be a challenge especially as he was now an independent candidate.
“I was first elected to the council at 24 years of age, and I never lost a council election,” he told the Herald recently. “I understand councillors’ roles and how councils work, so hopefully that will be a deciding factor for councillors in the region. I need the number ones, I know I will get lots of preferences but I need the number ones to survive the first, second, or third counts.”
He also indicated that regardless of the outcome he would remain a political activist, particularly for the north of the county.
