Local fire services were called to the Lidl store in Castlerea earlier today, Wednesday, following an incident that led to the evacuation of staff and customers.

Smoke was discovered billowing from a cardboard baling machine at the rear of the premises but fire crews successfully dealt with the incident.

The store was temporarily closed while emergency services responded.

Responding to queries from the Roscommon Herald, a spokesperson for Lidl said: "At Lidl, the safety of our colleagues and customers is our top priority. As a precaution, Lidl temporarily closed the Castlerea store and requested support from local fire services to inspect a potential issue.

"Local services responded promptly and determined no risk to safety and the store reopened within an hour."
