Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice was elected as cathaoirleach of the Roscommon Municipal District at this morning’s MD AGM, which was held in the council offices.

The Fianna Fáil councillor, who was the council cathaoirleach for the past year, was proposed and seconded by party colleagues, Cllrs Larry Brennan and Marty McDermott respectively.

The Castlerea man expressed his gratitude towards his colleagues for his selection.

He pointed out key areas he wanted to focus on as MD cathaoirleach, highlighting the need for verge trimming at junctions, safety crossing points in all villages, particularly Ballintubber and Cloonfad, flood prevention, housing, footpath cleaning and land zoning.

The recently co-opted Fine Gael councillor Ruth Connolly-Conboy was elected as leas cathaoirleach. She was proposed by Cllr Marty McDermott and seconded by outgoing cathaoirleach Cllr Larry Brennan.

She also thanked her fellow councillors, acknowledging their help in her first few months as a councillor. She stated that she looked forward to working alongside Cllr Fitzmaurice as leas cathaoirleach.

Outgoing cathaoirleach Cllr Larry Brennan was commended for his “accommodating” term as cathaoirleach.

Cllr Brennan thanked the councillors and staff for their help in his term, and reflected on “the high and low points” of the last year, praising Senator Gareth Scahill’s promotion and remembering the late Cllr Tony Waldron.
