Funeral hears Christy Glynn was “part and parcel of the fabric of Castlerea”
Tributes were paid to the late Christy Glynn at his funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church on Tuesday.
The late Christopher (Christy) Glynn was “part and parcel of the fabric of the community of Castlerea for many years”, his funeral mass at St. Patrick's Church heard on Tuesday.
Christy died peacefully last Friday surrounded by his loving family. The former station master had been involved in many organisations in the town most notably in the musical society and the golf club, serving as president in both organisations.
During the Mass a picture of his time as station master at Castlerea, another of Christy and his brother at Castlerea Golf Club, the Roscommon GAA colours, a certificate of his role as Billy Fisher in the award winning Billy Liar in 1973, and a plaque marking his time as Chairman of the Castlerea Rose Festival were displayed.
Christy was associated with many local groups and held numerous roles down through the years, the congregation heard.

Fr John McManus, PP said “Of course, as a younger man, he enjoyed badminton as well, but he certainly did love his golf. He was a great and a dedicated follower of the Roscommon GAA team and its teams. Christy was easily spotted (at games) because of that very distinctive hat he used to wear with the Roscommon ribbon around it, which is featured on the back of the memorial leaflet.
“He worked in his lifetime and gave great and dedicated service to CIE and many people, over these last days, and there was no shortage of people who remembered him, they described him as a people person, and I suppose that doesn't surprise us or shock us for all of us who knew him, we knew he was very much all that as well. He was a man who had time for people. He was a people person. When I say time for people he had time to chat and to listen to them. And there was one reference made and I thought it was very, very nice, he was described as a thoughtful man. Maybe many of you have experienced Christy's thoughtfulness in his life.”
He was also part of parish choir, with Fr McManus saying “it's very appropriate that they are here on this solemn.”
Fr Manus added: “This community of Castlerea will always have their own special and treasured memories of a man who was involved in so much around here. And with memory I always say a person remains close to you.”
Also remembered at the Mass was Christy’s cousin, well-known and popular figure, Tommy Bruen, who sadly passed away in a local road accident on Monday evening.
Christy will be sadly missed by his sisters Pauline, Angela, Patricia and Jackie, brothers Kevin, Dessie and Michael, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
Following the funeral mass he was laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
