Gardaí investigate fire that guts former Ballaghaderreen pub

Fire personnel tackling the blaze that broke out last night at at a former pub in Ballaghaderreen.

A garda investigation is underway to establish the cause of an extensive fire that gutted a former café/bar in Ballaghaderreen last night, Saturday.

The blaze broke out at the unoccupied property on Market Street in the town shortly before 8 p.m. yesterday evening with dense smoke billowing across a large surrounding area.

Two fire brigades from Ballaghaderreen and Charlestown along with a specialist aerial platform from Castlebar tackled the blaze to get it under control.

Fire personnel were also at the scene this morning to deal with the smouldering embers and gardaí have preserved the scene.

There are residents living in the immediate vicinity of the building but no-one was injured. Gardai had diversions in place during the operation.
