The landmark Roscommon Town Post Office building on The Square, which has served the public for more than 100 years, will close its doors for the final time later today (Friday) as the post office services relocate to a retail premises in the town.
Today marks the last day of business at the iconic building - which opened as a post office in 1912 - before services relocate to the new unit. The new post office will open on Tuesday, March 18th at 11 a.m. in the SuperValu Roscommon store.
A spokesperson for An Post outlined that staff at the Roscommon Town Post Office “have taken up the various options available to them”. The spokesperson said some have been redeployed within An Post and some will be working in the new set up.
An Post announced early last year that the services at the post office on The Square, previously run directly by the company, would be replaced by a contractor run operation following a tender process.
At the time of the controversial announcement early last year, the company said that the change in business model of its post office in Roscommon Town would not in any way change the range or extent of the services offered by the company.
The historic building is now set to be put up for sale following the move to the new location.
“We will be putting the building on the market immediately. Under the terms of An Post’s sustainable use policy, we will be mindful of working with local stakeholders and others to come up with a best next use for the building,” said the spokesperson.
