Increased Castlerea traffic impacting local disability services

A number of issues with increased traffic through Castlerea have been raised by the town’s Corlann services for people with disabilities.

Corlann (formerly Brothers of Charity), have raised the limited pedestrian crossing points in the town and the poor visibility at the Demesne junction.

Additionally traffic jams of up to 20 minutes at the Ballindrimley junction has led to residents missing appointments and staff being late for shift swaps.

Cllr Ruth Conboy brought the charity’s concerns to a recent meeting of the Roscommon Municipal District and stated that the issues were having “a significant impact on service users.” She also asked for an update on Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s (TII) proposed traffic scheme for the town.

In 2024 a Part 8 traffic safety scheme was rejected due to a significant reduction in street parking.

Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice highlighted that most of the traffic scheme was embraced, and he called for an open forum with the public to progress the scheme.

Cllr Nigel Dineen was of the belief a raised roundabout would function at the Ballindrimley junction, despite the TII stating there was not the sufficient space for one.

Cllr Michael Holland stated that “common sense needs to prevail” in relation to the town’s traffic scheme.

A council spokesperson confirmed that a proposed footpath continuing from the Demesne junction to Cahill’s SuperValu would be implemented, subject to cooperation with landowners.
